What is Alexa Rank?
An Alexa rank measures website popularity. It ranks millions upon millions of websites according to their popularity. An Alexa Rank 1 is the most popular. Alexa rank is a measure of how a website compares to other websites. This makes it an excellent KPI for benchmarking or competitive analysis. Alexa rank is calculated by a proprietary methodology. It combines the site’s estimated traffic over the past three months and visitor engagement. Traffic and engagement are estimated from the browsing behavior of people in our global panel, which is a sample of all Internet users.

How is Alexa rank calculated?
According to Alexa’s official website, the rank is calculated using a combination of estimated average daily unique visitors to the site and the estimated number of page views on the site over the past 3 months.
Their “global data panel” provides traffic data that is used to calculate their ranking system. This data is gathered from internet users who use one of the browser extensions available for Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.
The Alexa ranking algorithm reviews a website and calculates its frequency of visits. A single visit is when a user visits the same website multiple times in a day.
Two items are used to determine a site’s ranking.
- Unique daily visitors: The traffic to a site/number of Alexa users who visit it in a given day.
- Average pageviewsAlexa users view a page or URL a number of times.
Manipulating Alexa Traffic Rankings
With the launch of Alexandex “share trading” and more and more sites using Alexa Traffic Rankings as a way to judge their popularity (mostly because it is the only alternative); especially for ad selling, I thought it would be nice to revisit the manipulation of Alexa, an Amazon.com company. Alexa rankings are determined by how many times users have visited a site with the Alexa toolbar on their computers over a certain period of time.
Most publishers share an unspoken agreement that although Alexa stats are inaccurate, that Alexa is not that far off and its traffic ranking system does give publishers an idea of how they compare with others; the lower the number the better. A site ranked below 100,000 is considered to be somewhat popular. Sites ranked lower than 50,000 are not popular. Sites ranked under 10,000 are more popular than the top echelon and sites ranked above 1,000 are the best.
