Success of Grand Theft Auto V: Surpassing 190 Million Sales Milestone and GTA VI Release Date”

Rockstar Games

Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive has announced that Grand Theft Auto V has sold approximately 190 million units in just over a decade. GTA V launched in September 2013 and has since hopped between three console generations to remain a mainstay in the company’s game portfolio.

Take-Two Interactive has released its latest profits report for the quarter ending September 30, 2023, and the report has provided an update on the latest sales figures for its best-selling franchises and an update on the sales of individual games.

The Grand Theft Auto series is the best-selling franchise by Take-Two with over 410 million units sold-in. This is up from 405 million units in the prior quarter. It is “one of the most thriving, iconic, and critically acclaimed brands in all of entertainment,” according to Take-Two.

Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 190 million units, which is up from 185 million units. It is the “best-selling game of the past 10 years in the U.S., based on both unit and dollar sales.”

GTA VI release date

The GTA 6 release date is yet to be confirmed by Rockstar Games. That hasn’t stopped internet operatives from making some educated guesses. Multiple sources have corroborated a rumor that GTA 6 will be released in 2025, which was part of a larger info drop that suggested that Grand Theft Auto 6 would be set in a modern-day Vice City. It’s always wise to approach this sort of assumption with caution but with the new GTA 6 leaks appearing to confirm a modernized Vice City setting, perhaps a release sometime in 2025 is right on the finances.

Interestingly, Take-Two, the Rockstar owner, continues to imply GTA 6 is out by March 2025 while saying nothing about it. CEO Strauss Zelnick says “We remain sure that we are positioning our business for a significant inflection point in fiscal 2025, which we believe will include new record levels of operating performance.” That significant boost to revenue predictions is supposedly due to the GTA 6 launch.

However, there are a few rumors that GTA 6 could launch in 2024. Initially, a Bloomberg article stated that  “current and ex-Rockstar staff reckon GTA 6 is still at least two years away from release, suggesting a 2024 launch.” This was then backed up by Microsoft’s latest response to the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) examination into its ongoing acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

In it, Microsoft wrote the following: “The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to be released in 2024.”
