How many people use Google Gemini?
The Gemini app has one billion users, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said on the Q3 2026 earnings call on 28 October 2026; he did not say monthly. Google's earlier counts were monthly active users: 950 million in Q2 2026 and over 400 million in May 2025. In the US, 24% of adults said they use Gemini in Pew Research Center's February 2026 survey, second to ChatGPT at 44%.

Why sources differ
Same question, different answers
| Number | When | Who measured | Why it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 billion users | Oct 2026 | Alphabet | Company figure for the Gemini app worldwide; the remarks do not say monthly or daily. |
| 950 million monthly | Q2 2026 | Alphabet | Monthly active users of the Gemini app, company-reported. |
| 24% of US adults | Feb 2026 | Pew Research Center | Survey answer about any use of Gemini, US only. |
| 1 billion+ weekly | Aug 2026 | OpenAI | ChatGPT weekly active users; weekly counts are stricter than monthly ones. |
Google's figures are its own counts of Gemini app users worldwide. They are not audited, and Google does not say how it counts people who reach Gemini through Android, Chrome or Workspace rather than the app itself. Until July 2026 every figure was labelled monthly active users. The one billion given on 28 October 2026 is described only as users, so it may not be measured the same way as the 950 million a quarter earlier.
Pew's 24% is a survey answer from 5,119 US adults in February 2026. It counts anyone who says they use Gemini at all, however rarely, and covers only the US. It puts Gemini second to ChatGPT, used by 44% of US adults.
Comparing Gemini with ChatGPT by company figures is harder than it looks. OpenAI reports weekly active users and Google monthly ones, and a weekly count is the stricter test. Compare the two only within one survey, such as Pew's.
What it means
How to use these numbers
Gemini has become the second most used AI chatbot. Google's count of Gemini app monthly active users rose from over 400 million in May 2025 to 950 million in July 2026, Alphabet reported one billion users (not labelled monthly) in October 2026, and about a quarter of US adults say they use it.
It still trails ChatGPT in the US. Pew found 44% of adults use ChatGPT against 24% for Gemini, and ChatGPT leads in every age group. Gemini's use peaks among adults aged 30 to 49 (34%), while ChatGPT's peaks among those under 30.
Google has an advantage that no rival has: it can put Gemini into Search, Android, Chrome and Workspace. That helps its user count grow fast, but it also makes the count harder to compare with apps people choose to download.
For marketers, this means a plan for AI search should cover Gemini and Google's AI features, not only ChatGPT. For journalists, write "one billion users, according to Alphabet" with the date, and do not call it monthly unless Google does.
