Developer pay figures differ mainly because they measure different people and different kinds of pay. The BLS $134,040 is the median wage for software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers together; software developers alone earned a median $135,980, and testers pulled the group figure down. The BLS average (mean) wage for software developers, $148,100, is higher than the median because a minority of very high earners lifts the average. Stack Overflow's 2026 survey puts the median for US respondents at $154,000, but it asks for total compensation including bonuses and perks, its US respondents reported about 17 years of experience, and anyone can choose to answer, so it describes survey respondents, not all US developers. BLS wages come from its Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program, not from developers reporting their own pay. Web developers are a separate BLS occupation with a median of $92,650. Quote the BLS median for a typical US developer, and say whether it covers testers and web developers.

What it means

How to use these numbers

Software development pays well above the US average, and the typical entry route is a bachelor's degree. Half of software developers earned more than $135,980 in May 2025, more than two and a half times the median for all US workers ($50,980). The top tenth earned over $214,670.

Where you work and what you build matter. Software developers at software publishers had a median of $164,550, and California led the states at $174,410. Web developers earn much less, a median of $92,650, with the highest pay in Washington ($130,440) and Virginia ($128,380).

Pay has kept rising, though more slowly: the software developer median went from $120,730 in May 2021 to $135,980 in May 2025, about 13% in current dollars. BLS still expects jobs for software developers to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the 3% for all occupations, so for students and career changers the field remains a strong bet, even as AI coding tools change the work.
