Free llms.txt Generator and Validator
llms.txt is a short Markdown file at your site's root that lists your key pages for AI tools and agents. Enter your site and the generator reads your sitemap, picks the main pages and writes the file in the llmstxt.org format, with each page's own title and meta description as the note: nothing invented. Choose the pages, move them between sections, edit the notes, and download it. Already have one? The validator checks the format, Lighthouse's rules and every link. One honest note first: Google Search ignores the file, and most files are never requested. It is cheap and harmless, not a ranking lever. No sign-up.

How to use it
Site in, file out
Enter your site
We find the sitemap through robots.txt, then read the main pages' titles and meta descriptions. Pages that are noindex, redirect, error out or point their canonical elsewhere are left out, with the reason. No sitemap? Paste a list of URLs.
Choose the pages
Pages are grouped into sections by their folder, with legal pages under "Optional". Tick what belongs, drag pages between sections, rename sections, and edit any name or note. Keep it to the pages an agent would need: 20 to 50 is plenty.
Download, upload, check
Download llms.txt and upload it to the root of your site, so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt. Then run it through the Validate tab: the format, Lighthouse's rules and every link.

Quick answer
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file at /llms.txt that gives AI tools a short map of a site: an H1 with the site's name, a one-line summary, then H2 lists of key pages as [name](url) links with a note each, and an optional "Optional" section. Google Search ignores it and says it neither helps nor harms; in Ahrefs' May 2026 log study, 97% of files got no requests. It is worth a few minutes for documentation, APIs and products that agents work with, and harmless anywhere else.
What goes in it
The format, in order
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| # Site name | An H1 with the site or project name. The only required part. |
| > Summary | A blockquote: one line on what the site is. Optional, and the most useful line for an agent. |
| Notes | Optional paragraphs or lists, but no headings. |
| ## Sections | H2 headings, each a list of - [name](url): note links. |
| ## Optional | By convention, links an agent can skip, such as policies. |
Our own digitaltreed.com/llms.txt follows this format: services, free tools, pages, guides and posts, each linking a Markdown copy of the page.
Does it help?
The evidence, briefly
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| Google Search | You don't need llms.txt for Search or its AI features; it "will neither harm nor help", and it's fine to keep one for other services. |
| Ahrefs, 137,210 sites, May 2026 | 97% of llms.txt files got no requests. The bots that fetch pages to answer questions made 3.6% of the requests there were. |
| John Mueller, Google | "Purely speculative for now": make one when an AI platform that brings you clients asks for it. |
| Chrome Lighthouse | Its experimental agentic browsing audit checks the file when there is one: an H1, at least one Markdown link, 50 characters or more. A missing file is not a fail. |
So: cheap, harmless, and useful where the reader is a program, such as documentation and APIs. Don't pay anyone for it as a visibility service. The full picture is in GEO, chapter 7.
Where to put it
Root, plain text, every platform
| Where the site runs | How |
|---|---|
| Any host (cPanel, VPS, static) | Upload llms.txt to the web root, next to robots.txt. It should open at yoursite.com/llms.txt as plain text, not as a page. |
| WordPress | Yoast SEO and AIOSEO have an llms.txt switch that builds their own file from recent posts. To use this one instead, turn theirs off and upload the file to the root. |
| Shopify | Shopify does not serve files at the root; Yoast SEO for Shopify or an llms.txt app can serve one. |
| Wix, Webflow | Wix generates an llms.txt itself; Webflow serves one through its SEO settings or a proxy rule. Check the address after. |
| Behind Cloudflare | Make sure bot protection does not challenge /llms.txt, or agents get a challenge page instead of the file. |

llms.txt, llms-full.txt and .md copies
llms.txt is the short reading list. llms-full.txt, a convention from documentation platforms rather than part of the proposal, puts the whole text of the docs in one file. The proposal's second version (August 2026) also suggests a Markdown copy of each page at the same address plus .md, linked with rel="alternate" type="text/markdown", and a rel="describedby" link from pages to the llms.txt that covers them. The validator reports all three; none is required.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Does llms.txt help SEO?
Not in Google Search, which ignores it. No study shows it raises citations in AI answers either.
Do ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity read llms.txt?
Very rarely, going by server logs: in Ahrefs' May 2026 study, 97% of files got no requests at all.
What should llms.txt contain?
An H1 with the site name, a one-line summary, then H2 sections of your key pages as [name](url) links, each with a short note.
Where do I put llms.txt?
At the root of the site, served as plain text, so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt.
Where do the notes come from?
Each page's own meta description, which you already wrote. The tool does not invent text; edit any note before you download.
What is llms-full.txt?
A documentation convention: the whole docs in one file. It is not in the proposal, and most sites don't need it.
llms.txt or robots.txt?
robots.txt says which bots may crawl what. llms.txt is a reading list: it allows or blocks nothing. To let AI search bots in, check robots.txt with our AI Crawler Checker.
Why does Lighthouse flag my llms.txt?
Its check fails a file with no H1, no Markdown link (bare URLs don't count) or under 50 characters. The Validate tab shows which.
Does a missing blockquote make my file invalid?
No. Only the H1 is required. The validator lists the summary as recommended, not as an error.
Should I make one?
If you run docs, an API or a product agents use, yes. Anywhere else it is harmless and takes a few minutes; just don't expect traffic from it.
