Quick answer
What is a URL slug generator?
A URL slug generator turns a page title into the readable part of its web address: lowercase letters, words separated by hyphens, no punctuation or accents, filler words such as "a", "the" and "of" removed, and the main phrase kept. A good slug is three to five words that say what the page is about, such as /kaju-katli-recipe/, not the whole title and not a date. Once a page is published, keep its slug; if you must change it, add a 301 redirect.
The rules
What the generator does to a title, and why
| Rule | Why | Before and after |
|---|---|---|
| Lowercase | URLs are case sensitive on most servers; one form only | Kaju-Katli becomes kaju-katli |
| Hyphens between words | Google reads a hyphen as a space; an underscore joins the words | kaju katli becomes kaju-katli |
| Punctuation out, apostrophes closed up | Nothing to encode, no stray letters | Nitin's picks! becomes nitins-picks |
| Accents and Hindi to plain letters | Shareable, readable, no %e0%a4 encoding | Café becomes cafe; अचार becomes achar |
| Filler words out | Shorter, the meaning stays; click a word to keep it when it matters | how to make a starter becomes make-starter, or how-to-make-starter if you keep the first two |
| Years and dates out | A date in the address makes the page look old when you update it | best-laptops-2026 becomes best-laptops |
| Numbers kept | "10 tips" is the topic; "2026" is not | 10-tips stays |
| Under about 60 characters | Fits a search result and a shared link; three to five words | The longest words that are not the keyword go first |
Hindi and Hinglish
Slugs for Hindi and Hinglish titles
WordPress keeps Devanagari in the address and browsers show it encoded: /%e0%a4%95%e0%a4%9a%e0%a5%8d%e0%a4%9a%e0%a5%87-…/. Google accepts it, but nobody can read or type it. The generator writes the words in Latin letters the way people type them.
| Title | Slug |
|---|---|
| कच्चे आम का अचार बनाने की विधि | kacche-aam-ka-achar-banane-ki-vidhi |
| Sasti flight kaise book karein | sasti-flight-kaise-book-karein (Hinglish stays as typed) |
| कानपुर में घूमने की 10 जगहें | kanpur-mein-ghumne-ki-10-jaghein |
Hinglish filler (ka, ki, ke, ko, se, me, aur, hai) can be dropped like English filler with the "Drop Hinglish filler" option. It is off by default, because "ki vidhi" often belongs in the phrase. The spelling is a readable approximation, not a transliteration standard: check a proper name before you publish.
Your platform
Where to paste the slug
| Platform | Field | Note |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress | Permalink › URL slug, in the post sidebar | WordPress makes one from the title with every filler word; replace it before publishing. Yoast and Rank Math show the same field. |
| Shopify | Search engine listing › URL handle | Products and collections get /products/ and /collections/ prefixes you cannot change. |
| Wix | SEO basics › URL slug | Set per page. |
| Blogger | Permalink › Custom permalink | Only before publishing. |
| Webflow, Squarespace | Page settings › Slug | Changing it later needs a 301 redirect. |
Common mistakes
The slug mistakes the generator catches
The whole title as the slug
/10-best-places-to-visit-in-kanpur-with-your-family-in-2026/ says nothing the first five words do not. Filler goes, the length is capped, the keyword stays.
A year or date in the address
Fine in the title, where you can update it. In the slug it dates the page for ever, or forces a redirect next year. Flagged and dropped.
Stray letters and encoding
"Nitin's" becoming nitin-s, café kept with its accent, Hindi turned into %e0%a4. Apostrophes close up, accents fold, Devanagari becomes plain letters.
A slug that is already taken
WordPress quietly adds -2. The free-address check fetches your site and tells you before you publish.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a URL slug?
The readable part of a web address after the domain and folders: in https://example.com/blog/kaju-katli-recipe/ the slug is kaju-katli-recipe. It is set once per page and should say what the page is about.
How do I create an SEO-friendly URL slug?
Take the main phrase of the title, three to five words, in lowercase with hyphens between them. Leave out filler words, punctuation, dates and IDs. The generator does exactly that, and shows what it changed.
How long should a URL slug be?
Three to five words, under about 60 characters, is the sweet spot: it fits a search result and a shared link. Google has said length is not a ranking factor; readability is what you are after.
Should I remove stop words from URLs?
Usually yes: "a", "the", "of", "in" add length and no meaning. Keep them when the phrase reads wrong without them, such as how-to-rank-on-google. The generator strikes them and lets you click any word back in.
Hyphen or underscore?
Hyphen. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words and an underscore as a join, so running_shoes reads as one word. The underscore option is there for a CMS that insists, with a warning.
Do keywords in the URL help rankings?
A very lightweight signal at most. The real gain is that a clear slug tells people what they will get, so they click and share it. Enter your keyword and the generator warns if trimming removed it.
Can I change a slug after publishing?
Yes, but the old address stops working. Add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one, or you lose the links and rankings the page earned. Treat a slug as permanent once a page is indexed.
Should the slug match the title?
The main phrase, yes; every word, no. "10 Best Places to Visit in Kanpur With Your Family in 2026" becomes 10-best-places-visit-kanpur-family.
Should I put the year in the URL?
No. It dates the page when you update it next year. Keep the year in the title, where you can change it. The generator flags years and dates and drops them unless you untick the option.
Are URLs case sensitive?
On most servers, yes: /Kaju-Katli/ and /kaju-katli/ are different pages. Always lowercase.
What about Hindi or other non-English titles?
Google accepts Devanagari in URLs, but browsers show it percent-encoded and nobody can type it. Writing the words in Latin letters, the way people type them, keeps the address readable and shareable. The generator does that; other scripts are dropped, so type those titles in Latin letters.
Does WordPress make the slug for me?
Yes, from the title, with every filler word and the year. Edit it in the Permalink box before you publish.
Is the URL slug generator free?
Yes, with no sign-up. It runs in your browser; we only fetch your site when you ask whether an address is free, and keep nothing.
