Pew Research Center teen surveys; 1,458 teens in 2025, 1,391 in 2024, 1,453 in 2023 and 1,316 in 2022. Shares of all teens. The three frequency answers are from Pew's 2025 teen topline. The last column is the daily figure each year's Pew report gives; the 2024 report says only 'about six-in-ten'. Pew rounds each answer, so adding them can miss Pew's daily figure by a point.

Same question, different answers
| Number | When | Who measured | Why it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 37% | Jan-Jun 2026 | Pew Research Center, US adults | Adults who say they ever use TikTok, however rarely |
| 24% | Feb-Mar 2025 | Pew Research Center, American Trends Panel | Adults who use TikTok at least once a day; a separate survey |

| 42% | Jan 2026 | Edison Research and SSRS, The Infinite Dial 2026 | Americans 12 and older who say they currently use TikTok; includes 12 to 17 year olds, so not an adult figure |
| 25% | Mar 2026 | Reuters Institute, Digital News Report 2026 | US online survey respondents who used TikTok for any purpose in the last week |
The share of Americans on TikTok depends on what counts as using it. Pew's main figure, 37% of adults, counts anyone who says they ever use the app, so it includes people who open it once a month. Only 24% of adults use it every day, from a separate Pew survey in early 2025, and about two in three users do. Teens are a different population: 68% of 13 to 17 year olds use TikTok, from Pew's own teen survey, so their figures should not be mixed into an adult ranking. News use is narrower again: 20% of adults regularly get news on TikTok. Headlines that quote a number of US users in the hundreds of millions come from the company and count accounts or monthly users, which are not the same as people, and they include under-18s. Within Pew's adult series, compare years from the same survey design: TikTok rose from 33% in 2024 to 37% in 2025 and held there in 2026.
Two independent surveys bracket Pew's figure. Edison Research's Infinite Dial 2026 found 42% of Americans 12 and older currently use TikTok. It is higher than Pew partly because it counts people aged 12 and up, and teens use TikTok far more than adults (68% in Pew's teen survey). Its sample also differs: online only, half from a probability panel and half non-probability. The Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026 found 25% of its US online sample used TikTok for any purpose in the last week. That is a narrower test, use in the last seven days rather than ever use, so it is lower. Reuters says its online samples tend to under-represent the news habits of older and less affluent people.
What it means
How to use these numbers
TikTok has stopped growing among American adults. It went from 21% in 2021 to 33% in 2023 and 37% in 2025, and stayed at 37% in 2026. That still puts it fourth among the platforms Pew asks about, behind YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
The audience is young and leans female, Hispanic and Black. 65% of adults under 30 use it against 11% of those 65 and older, women use it more than men (43% vs 31%), and over half of Hispanic (53%) and Black (51%) adults do, against 30% of White adults. Use also falls with income and education.
For a small business, TikTok is a strong channel if your customers are under 30, and a weak one if they are over 50. Spend your time and budget there only if that is where your buyers are. Teens are heavy users: 61% use it every day and 21% say they are on it almost constantly, so brands that sell to families should expect their younger customers to discover products there.
