How to use it
Make a sitemap in three steps
Enter the home page, or paste a URL list
Pick how many pages to crawl (50 to 500) and whether to skip archives, compare with the live sitemap and collect images.
Click Generate sitemap
We follow internal links as Googlebot would, honouring robots.txt, in the background. Leave the page if you like; the crawl carries on and the address keeps the result for a day.
Download sitemap.xml and put it live
Toggle a rule to change what goes in; the file rebuilds as you do. Upload it to the site root, add the Sitemap line to robots.txt, submit it in Search Console and Bing. Read what was left out and why: it is a list of pages to fix.

What it does
What the XML sitemap generator does
Crawls like Googlebot
Follows internal links from the home page, same host only, honouring robots.txt. Up to 500 pages, one at a time, in the background.
Keeps only indexable pages
Status 200, canonical, no noindex in the meta tag or header. Everything else is listed with its reason, and a toggle brings it back if you disagree.
Honest lastmod
Written only when the server sends a real past Last-Modified date. Never "today" on every page, which Google learns to ignore.
Compares with the live sitemap
Reachable pages your current sitemap lacks, and sitemap URLs no link leads to: the orphan check from the Advanced guide, done for you.
Images, optionally
image:image entries for each page's pictures, for Google Images.
Validate in one click
Send the file to our XML Sitemap Validator to check the XML and test a sample of its URLs before you submit.
Before you start
Does your platform already make a sitemap?
Most do. Check the address first; if it loads, you need our XML Sitemap Validator, not a generator.
| Platform | Makes one? | Address | When you still need a generator |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress (Yoast, Rank Math) | Yes | /sitemap_index.xml | Never; fix the plugin settings instead. |
| WordPress (no SEO plugin) | Yes, since 5.5 | /wp-sitemap.xml | Rarely; only if a theme or plugin disabled it. |
| Shopify | Yes, cannot be turned off | /sitemap.xml | Never. |
| Wix, Squarespace, Webflow | Yes | /sitemap.xml | Never; hide pages from search in the editor. |
| Blogger | Yes | /sitemap.xml | Never. |
| Hand-built HTML, static site generators, old CMSs | Often not | Check /sitemap.xml | Yes: this tool. Regenerate when you add pages. |
Quick answer
What is an XML sitemap generator?
An XML sitemap generator crawls a website by following its internal links and writes the pages it finds into a sitemap.xml file in the format Google and Bing read. A good one keeps only pages that return 200, are canonical and are not marked noindex, drops duplicates and tracking parameters, and tells you what it left out. WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace already make a sitemap; a generator is for sites that do not, such as hand-built HTML sites, old CMSs and static sites.
What we leave out
What goes in the sitemap, and what we leave out
A sitemap is a list of pages you want indexed. Everything else wastes Google's crawl, and some of it contradicts your own tags.
| Left out | Why | What goes in instead |
|---|---|---|
| Redirects (301, 302) | Google follows them and may report "Redirect error" | The redirect target, when it is on the site |
| 404s and server errors | Dead links waste crawl budget | Nothing: fix the link |
| noindex pages | Listing a page you asked Google not to index is a contradiction | Nothing |
| Pages whose canonical points elsewhere | Google indexes the canonical, not this URL | The canonical URL |
| Tracking parameters; slash and www twins | Duplicates of the same page | The clean URL |
| Tag and date archives, search results, sort and filter pages, cart, account, thank-you pages | Thin or private pages nobody searches for | Nothing (a toggle brings them back) |
| PDFs, images, feeds | Not HTML pages | Images as image entries if you tick the option |
| Pages blocked by robots.txt | Googlebot may not read them either | Nothing: change robots.txt if they should be indexed |
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an XML sitemap?
A small site with good internal links gets indexed without one, but it costs nothing and helps when the site is new, large, or has pages with few links. Google asks for one in Search Console either way.
How do I create a sitemap for a static HTML site?
Enter the home page here, download sitemap.xml, upload it next to index.html, add "Sitemap: https://yoursite/sitemap.xml" to robots.txt and submit it in Search Console. Regenerate when you add pages.
Does WordPress, Shopify or Wix make a sitemap automatically?
Yes. WordPress at /wp-sitemap.xml (or /sitemap_index.xml with Yoast or Rank Math), Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and Blogger at /sitemap.xml. You do not need a generator; use the validator to check the file.
Where do I put sitemap.xml?
At the site root is the convention, but any path works if you submit it in Search Console and list it in robots.txt. A sitemap can only list URLs on its own host, under the path it sits in or above.
How do I submit a sitemap to Google and Bing?
Search Console › Indexing › Sitemaps › enter the address › Submit. Bing Webmaster Tools › Sitemaps › Submit, or import the site from Search Console. Both re-read it on their own afterwards.
Should the sitemap include every page?
Only canonical, indexable pages that return 200. Not redirects, 404s, noindex pages, filters, searches, cart or account pages. That is what this tool leaves out, with the reason for each, and a toggle for each rule if you disagree.
Why did it find fewer pages than my site has?
Four usual causes: links added by JavaScript (we do not run scripts, neither does Google's first pass), pages blocked by robots.txt, pages no link leads to (orphans), and the page cap. The Left out tab and the Compare tab show which.
Does the sitemap need lastmod, priority and changefreq?
lastmod helps when it is accurate, so we write it only from a real server date. Google ignores priority and changefreq; the toggle adds them for other engines if you want.
What is the limit?
500 pages per crawl here; 50,000 URLs and 50 MB per file in the format. Bigger sites should use their CMS's sitemap, Screaming Frog, or a sitemap index.
Can I generate a sitemap for a site behind a login or on staging?
Not by crawling. Paste a URL list instead: we normalise and deduplicate it and build the file; the fetch checks need the pages to be public, so untick "Fetch each URL" for a private site.
How often should I regenerate it?
Whenever you add or remove pages. A CMS does this for you; a static site needs a new file each time.
Is the XML sitemap generator free?
Yes, with no sign-up. Up to 500 pages per crawl, two crawls at a time per person, results kept for 24 hours. A crawl of the same site with the same options within six hours reuses the earlier result.
