Free Image Compressor and WebP Converter

Drop up to 50 photos, or paste a page's address and take every image on it. Each one comes back as WebP, AVIF or its own format, resized to the width it is shown at, with the before and after sizes beside it and a slider to check the quality. Set a size in KB when a form or WhatsApp needs one. Download all as a ZIP with clean file names, and copy the picture tag with width, height and the fallback. Everything runs in your browser; the photos are never uploaded.

Image Compressor · The work happens in your browser with the codecs Squoosh uses (MozJPEG, OxiPNG, libwebp, libavif). Your photos are never uploaded.

How to use it

Smaller images, the same look, in three steps

  1. Drop the images, or paste the page

Up to 50 files at once: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or BMP, any size. Or paste a page's address: we list every image on it with its weight, its type and the width it is shown at, and you take them all in one click.

  2. Pick the format, the quality, the width

WebP for everything now, AVIF when you serve both, or keep the format. Quality 80 looks the same as the original; or type a size in KB for a form or a WhatsApp card and the quality is searched until the file fits. Resize to the width the page shows it at: that saves more than any codec.

  3. Check, download, paste

Drag the slider on any image and zoom on a face or text. Download one, or all as a ZIP with clean file names. Copy the picture tag with AVIF, WebP and the fallback, width and height, and lazy loading on everything but the hero.

Quick answer

What does an image compressor do?

An image compressor makes a picture's file smaller without a visible change: it re-encodes the pixels at a lower quality (lossy) or packs them tighter (lossless), drops the camera's hidden metadata, and, done well, also resizes the image to the width the page shows it at, which saves more than any format. WebP makes a file about a quarter to a third smaller than JPEG at the same look and opens in every current browser; AVIF is smaller again but slower to make and absent on old iPhones, so sites serve both inside a picture element with a JPEG fallback. This one does all of it in the browser, 50 images at once, with the HTML to paste.

Google's own list of image formats it indexes: BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG and AVIF. File names should be short and descriptive, with hyphens between words; the tool renames on download. Browser figures from caniuse, checked 21 October 2026. JPEG XL is named here on purpose and not offered: Chrome only added decoding in late 2025 and most other browsers lack it.

The two PageSpeed lines

"Serve images in next-gen formats" and "properly size images"

The first lists JPG and PNG files that would be smaller as WebP or AVIF: convert them, and if a file name changes on a live site, redirect the old address (Google's own advice). The second lists images wider than the space they fill, 4 KB or more wasted on each: resize them to the width shown, or add a srcset. Paste the page here and both lists become one batch, with the width each image is shown at already filled in from its tag.

Photos for forms

Under 50 KB for SSC, under 300 KB for UPSC

Type the KB limit from your notice, choose JPG, and set the pixel size the form asks for (SSC: 200 × 230 for the photo, 140 × 60 for the signature; UPSC: 350 × 350). The quality is searched until the file fits, and the result is shown before you download so a face is never smudged. Limits change every cycle: check your notice. The KB chips carry SSC's and WhatsApp's numbers as a start, not as a rule.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The compression runs inside your browser with WebAssembly codecs (the ones Squoosh uses); the files never leave your device. The page mode fetches a page's images through our server once, so the browser can read them, and keeps nothing.

WebP or AVIF: which should I use?

WebP for everything now. AVIF is smaller still but slower to make and missing on old iPhones; serve both inside a picture element with a JPG fallback, which the tool writes for you.

Does compressing images hurt SEO or quality?

Not at quality 75 to 85. Google reads the pixels, not the bytes, and a sharp, light image beats a heavy one on every speed report. Check the slider on a face or on text before you download.

What size should images be for a website?

The width they are shown at, times two for sharp screens at most. Under 200 KB for a content image, under 100 KB for a thumbnail, and the hero as small as it stays sharp. A 4,000-pixel phone photo shown 800 pixels wide is wasted weight.

Why does Google say "serve images in next-gen formats"?

Because the page has JPG or PNG files that would be smaller as WebP or AVIF. Convert them; keep the old address behind a redirect if the file name changes.

Why does Google say "properly size images"?

Because a file is wider than the space it fills, by enough to waste 4 KB or more. Resize before upload, or use srcset so phones get a smaller copy.

How do I compress a photo to 50 KB for an SSC or bank form?

Type 50 in the KB field, choose JPG and set the pixel size from the notice. The tool finds the highest quality that fits and shows the result before you download.

Will WebP open in every browser?

Every current one, on phones and computers, and Google Images indexes it. The picture tag keeps a JPG fallback for anything older.

Does WordPress make WebP itself?

WordPress serves WebP uploads since 5.8, and since 6.5 it can make WebP copies on upload when the host's image library allows it. Plugins such as ShortPixel and Imagify convert whole libraries for a fee; uploading files already compressed here is free.

Is lossless compression worth it?

For logos, icons and screenshots: yes, as PNG or lossless WebP, the edges stay crisp. For photos: no, lossy at 80 looks the same and is five times smaller. The tool proposes lossless when an image has few colours.

Does it remove EXIF data?

Yes: the camera model, the date and the GPS location of a phone photo are left out of every file it writes. The photo's orientation and colour profile are applied first, so nothing lies on its side or shifts colour.

What about the file name?

Name the file in words with hyphens: root-canal-xray-screen.webp, not IMG_2041.jpg. The tool cleans names on download and lets you type a better one per image.

Can I convert WebP back to JPG?

Yes. WebP, AVIF, PNG, GIF and BMP go in; JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF come out. iPhone HEIC photos are not read yet: export them as JPG from Photos first.

Why is my PNG still big?

It is probably a photo saved as PNG, which cannot shrink much losslessly. Choose WebP or JPG; PNG is for flat graphics.

Why did it keep my original?

When the new file would be bigger than the one you gave it (an image already well compressed), the tool keeps the original bytes and says so, rather than hand you a heavier file.
