Quick answer
How to edit a PDF for free
Open Edit PDF, add your file, then click Text, Whiteout, Highlight or Signature and drag the new item into place on the page. Click Save edited PDF to download. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, and the whole job happens on your own device.
Pick a tool
The editor opens on Edit PDF. Use the tabs at the top to switch to any of the 12 tools, from Sign PDF to Page numbers.
Add your file
Click Select PDF file or drop it on the box. The pages appear right away in a live preview.
Make your changes
Add text, ticks, dates and a signature, or set the options for the tool you picked. The preview shows the result as you work.
Download, or keep going
Click the yellow button to save. From the download screen you can send the file straight to another tool, for example sign it and then compress it, without adding it again.

Edit PDF
Add text, white out and fill forms
Type neatly on a PDF the way you would write on paper, then save it as a normal PDF anyone can open.
Click Text and a text box appears on the page. Type in the side panel, then drag the box onto the field or line where it belongs. You can pick a Sans, Serif or Mono font, change the size and colour, and make it bold. This is the quickest way to fill in a form that was never made fillable: an application, a rental agreement, a tax form or a delivery note.
Made a mistake in a document you no longer have the original of? Cover the wrong date, typo or old address with Whiteout and type the correct text on top. Text in Hindi and other scripts works too: when a character is not in the built-in PDF fonts, the editor draws it with your device's own fonts and places it as a sharp image of the text.
Text in any colour
Sans, Serif or Mono, sizes 6 to 96, any colour, bold on or off. Press Enter in the text field for a second line.
Whiteout and boxes
A white box hides a mistake; a filled box in any colour, such as black, blocks out details. Drag the green dot to resize.
Highlighter
Mark the lines that matter in a contract, a report or study notes.
Images and logos
Place a logo, stamp or photo anywhere. The green dot resizes it and keeps its proportions.
Tick, cross and date
One click adds a tick or cross for checkboxes, or today's date, ready to drag into place.
Repeat on every page
Tick "Put this on every page" to repeat an item, such as initials or a logo, on all pages. Duplicate copies an item in one click.
Can I change the existing text?
Not directly, and it is better to know that up front. This editor adds things on top of the page; it cannot retype the words that are already in the PDF. To change them, cover the old words with Whiteout and type the new text over it. The same trick works on scanned PDFs, where the text is part of the picture anyway.
Whiteout is not redaction, unless you flatten
Whiteout and boxes only cover content visually. The text underneath is still in the file and can be copied out. Before you share a document with hidden account numbers or IDs, open Save options and turn on Flatten edited pages. Edited pages are then turned into images, so the covered content is really gone. Those pages lose selectable text, which is the price of true redaction.
How to add text to a PDF
Add your file
Choose Edit PDF and select your PDF.
Click Text
Open Add to page and click Text. A text box appears on the page.
Type and place it
Type in the side panel, then drag the box into position in the preview.
Fine-tune
Use the − and + zoom buttons for tiny form fields, and the arrow keys to nudge the selected item. Delete removes it.
Save
Click Save edited PDF and download your file.
Sign PDF
Sign a PDF in under a minute
No printing, signing and scanning. Make your signature once, then place it wherever it is needed.
Draw your signature
Sign with a mouse, a trackpad or your finger on the smooth signature pad. On a phone or tablet it feels just like signing on paper.
Type your name
Type your full name and pick one of three handwriting styles: Script, Brush or Classic. Handy when you want the same neat signature every time.
Upload a photo
Sign a sheet of white paper, take a photo and upload it. Keep Remove white background on, and the paper disappears so only the ink is placed on the page.
Choose black, blue or green ink. Blue is popular for signed originals, because it is easy to tell apart from a black-and-white photocopy.
Placing the signature
Click Add signature to page, then drag the signature onto the signature line and resize it with the green dot. Zoom in for a precise fit. Add the date next to it with the Date button, and use "Put this on every page" if every page needs your initials. Then click Save signed PDF.
Electronic or digital signature?
This tool adds a visual electronic signature: an image of your signature placed on the page. That is accepted for many everyday agreements, forms and approvals. It is not a certificate-based digital signature (a DSC), which some government portals, tax filings and courts require. When in doubt, check what the person or office receiving the document asks for.
Merge PDF
Combine PDF files into one
Add two or more PDFs and put them in the exact order you want with the ↑ ↓ arrows, or sort them A → Z, Z → A or reverse them. The live preview colour-codes pages by the file they came from. You can mix in JPG, PNG and WebP images too; each one becomes an A4 page, which is handy for joining scanned IDs, certificates and forms into one application file.
- Merge only some pages by typing ranges under a file, such as 1-3, 7
- Mix PDFs and images in any order
- Sort A → Z or Z → A, or reverse the file order
- Add a blank page between files for double-sided printing
Merged file too big? Click Compress on the download screen instead of adding it again. The full guide is on the Merge PDF page.
Compress PDF
Reduce PDF size
Four levels, from barely touched to as small as possible. If a file cannot get any smaller, you get your original back, never a bigger copy.
| Level | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Re-compresses only very large photos (over 2400 px). Text stays sharp and selectable. | Portfolios and brochures where quality comes first |
| Balanced (recommended) | Shrinks photos to 1600 px at 70% quality. Text stays sharp and selectable. | Email attachments and most uploads |
| Strong | Shrinks photos to 1100 px at 55% quality. Text stays selectable. | Reports and presentations with many images |
| Max | Turns each page into a JPEG image. You set the resolution (50 to 200 DPI) and quality (30 to 90%). | Scanned documents and strict size limits |
Any level can also convert images to grayscale for an extra saving.
Compress to 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB
Upload portals often set a hard limit. These settings are good starting points; the final size depends on how much is on each page, so always check the result.
| Target size | Try this setting | Works for | Extra tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 100 KB | Max · 72 to 90 DPI · 40 to 55% quality | 1 to 2 page scanned certificates, IDs, mark sheets | Keep only the pages asked for, and turn on grayscale |
| Under 200 KB | Max · 100 to 110 DPI · 55 to 65% quality | 3 to 4 page scanned documents | Crop phone photos before you make the PDF |
| Under 500 KB | Strong for text PDFs, or Max · about 120 DPI for scans | Résumés with a photo, application bundles | Strong keeps résumé text selectable for applicant tracking systems |
| 1 to 2 MB | Balanced | Reports, invoices, presentations, email | The change is hard to see on screen or in print |
| 5 to 10 MB or more | Light or Balanced | Brochures, catalogues, print-ready files | Avoid Max so vector graphics and text stay crisp |
Why some PDFs barely shrink
A text-only PDF is already tiny; most of its size is embedded fonts, not photos, so there is little to squeeze. A file that was compressed before has little left to give. Scans gain the most, because every page is one big picture: use Max with a lower DPI. More detail is on the Compress PDF page.
Split PDF
Split a PDF and extract pages
Four ways to cut a PDF. The preview colours the pages so you can see which file each one will land in.
Custom ranges
Type 1-3, 4-8, 9- and each range becomes its own PDF. "9-" means page 9 to the end.
Every N pages
One slider (1 to 50) cuts a 100-page scan into 10-page files, or a PDF into halves.
Pick pages
Click the thumbnails you want. Save them as one new PDF, or each picked page as its own PDF.
Every page
Every page becomes a separate PDF. When there are several files, they download together as one ZIP.
Applications often want each document uploaded separately. Split a scanned bundle into single documents, then compress each one under the size limit.
JPG to PDF
Convert photos and images to PDF
Turn JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP images into a PDF, one page per image, in the order you set.
- Page size: A4, US Letter, Legal or the image's own size
- Auto orientation: landscape photos get landscape pages
- Fit the whole image, or fill the page edge to edge
- No, small or large margins for a printed look
- Shrink big photos so 12-megapixel phone shots make a light PDF
- Phone photos turned the right way up from their EXIF data
Add your images, reorder them with ↑ ↓, choose the page size, margin and fit, then click Create PDF. The JPG to PDF page has the full guide, including phone scanning tips.
PDF to JPG
Convert PDF pages to images
Save pages as pictures for WhatsApp, Instagram, slides, websites or printing. You choose the format, the resolution and which pages.
| Resolution | Size of an A4 page | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 72 DPI | 595 × 842 px | Quick previews, thumbnails, chat apps |
| 150 DPI | 1240 × 1754 px | Websites, social media, slides (recommended) |
| 200 DPI | 1654 × 2339 px | Sharp on-screen reading and zooming |
| 300 DPI | 2480 × 3508 px | Printing and archiving |
JPG
The smallest files for photos and mixed pages. Quality is adjustable from 40 to 100%.
PNG
Lossless and crystal clear for text, charts and diagrams, with bigger files.
WebP
A modern web format: close to PNG clarity at a fraction of the size.
Convert all pages, the pages you click, or a range such as 1-3, 8. Several images download together as a ZIP.
Organize and rotate
Rearrange, delete and rotate pages
See every page as a thumbnail and fix the order with your mouse or finger.
- Drag pages by the ⠿ handle to reorder them
- Delete the pages you do not need, and add blank pages anywhere
- Add more PDFs to shuffle pages across files in one go
- Find and select blank pages from a scan in one click
- Rotate one, selected or all pages by 90° left, 90° right or 180°
- Make all portrait turns sideways pages upright
- Quick select: all, none, odd, even, blank or landscape pages
- Reverse the order, or go back to the original order
How to delete pages from a PDF

Finishing touches
Watermarks, page numbers and metadata
Add a watermark
Stamp text such as CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT or SAMPLE, or upload your logo. Set the font, size, colour, opacity and angle. Place it in the center, along the top or bottom, or as a tiled pattern across the page, on all, odd, even or a range of pages.
Add page numbers
Choose a format: 1, Page 1, Page 1 of 12, 1 / 12 or – 1 –. Pick one of six positions and set the font, size, colour and distance from the edge. Start from any number and skip the cover page if you like.
Edit metadata
Change the title, author, subject and keywords that show in file properties and search results, or clear them all, including hidden XMP data, before you share a file publicly.
Troubleshooting
Common problems and fixes
Most PDF trouble comes down to a handful of causes. Here is what to do.
The PDF will not open
It is probably password protected. Open it in your PDF app, remove the password, then add it here and set the password again afterwards if you need one. Files that only block copying or editing still work: their pages are processed as images.
The hidden text can still be copied
Whiteout only covers text visually. Open Save options, turn on Flatten edited pages and save again, so the covered words are really gone from the file.
My text does not line up with the form
Zoom in with the + button, select the text box and nudge it with the arrow keys. A smaller font size often fits tight boxes better than a long, squeezed line.
The signed file is too big to upload
Click Compress on the download screen and start with Balanced. For a hard limit like 100 KB or 200 KB, use Max with a lower resolution and quality, and remove pages you do not need with Split first.

Best practices
PDF tips that save you time
Do
Check the preview before you download, especially after heavy compression. Keep an original copy before editing, signing or redacting. Use Flatten when information must be hidden for good. Choose 150 DPI for screens and 300 DPI for print when converting to images. Split multi-page scans when a portal wants each document separately. Give the output a clear file name, such as Rahul-Resume-2026.pdf, in the Output file name box.
Don't
Don't rely on Whiteout alone to hide passwords, ID numbers or bank details. Don't use Max compression on print-ready brochures; use Balanced. Don't compress the same PDF again and again, because quality drops each time. Don't upload confidential files to server-based sites. Don't submit scans with blank or sideways pages; delete and rotate them first. Don't use a visual signature where a certificate-based digital signature is legally required.

Honest limits
What this PDF editor can't do
Better to know before you start than halfway through.
Retype existing text
You can cover text with Whiteout and add new text, but you cannot edit the original words of the PDF.
PDF to Word or Excel
Turning a PDF into an editable Office document is not available.
OCR for scans
You can edit, merge and compress scanned pages, but their text cannot be made searchable or copyable.
Add or remove passwords
Unlock a password-protected PDF in your PDF reader first, then add it here.
Exact KB targets
Compression uses levels and sliders, not a target size. Use the size guide above to get under limits like 100 KB or 200 KB.
Certificate digital signatures
Signatures are visual electronic signatures, not DSC certificate signatures.
Privacy
Your PDFs never leave your device
Every tool runs inside your browser with open-source PDF libraries. Your file is read into the browser's memory, edited there and handed back to you as a download. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and nobody, including DigitalTreed, sees your documents. Close the tab and the page forgets them.
- No upload to any server
- No file storage
- No account
- No tracking of what is in your files
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF editor really free?
Yes. All 12 tools (edit, sign, merge, split, compress, PDF to JPG, JPG to PDF, organize, rotate, watermark, page numbers and metadata) are free, with no sign-up, no watermark, no trial and no daily limit.
Are my files uploaded or stored anywhere?
No. The tools run inside your web browser, so your PDFs and images are processed on your own computer or phone and never sent to a server. That makes it safe for contracts, IDs, bank statements and other private documents.
How do I edit text in a PDF for free?
Open Edit PDF, add your file and click Text to place a new text box. To change existing words, cover them with Whiteout and type the new text on top. Set the font, size and colour in the side panel, then click Save edited PDF.
Can I change the existing text in a PDF?
Not directly; the editor adds content on top of the page. Cover the old words with Whiteout and type the new text over them. For many small corrections this is the fastest fix.
How do I fill in a PDF form that is not fillable?
Use Text for answers, Tick or Cross for checkboxes and Date for today's date. Drag each item onto its field, and zoom in for small boxes.
How do I merge PDF files into one?
Choose Merge PDF, add two or more PDFs (images work too), set the order with the ↑ ↓ arrows or Sort A → Z, and click Merge files. Type ranges such as 1-3, 7 to merge only some pages. See Merge PDF.
How can I compress a PDF to 100 KB or 200 KB?
Open Compress PDF and choose Max. For under 100 KB, try 72 to 90 DPI and 40 to 55% quality; for under 200 KB, try 100 to 110 DPI and 55 to 65%. If it is still too big, keep only the pages you need and compress again. Always check the preview for readable text. See Compress PDF.
Can I reduce PDF size without losing quality?
Yes. Light and Balanced only re-compress large photos and leave text, fonts and vector graphics untouched, so text stays sharp and selectable. Photo-heavy PDFs often shrink a lot on Balanced with no difference you can see on screen.
How do I convert JPG to PDF on my phone?
Open this page in your phone's browser, pick JPG to PDF and tap Select images. Choose photos from your gallery, reorder them, pick A4 and Auto orientation, and tap Create PDF. The PDF is saved to Downloads on Android or the Files app on iPhone. See JPG to PDF.
How do I convert a PDF to high-quality JPG images?
Choose PDF to JPG, add your PDF and pick 300 DPI for print or 150 DPI for screens. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP and all, picked or a range of pages, then click Convert to images. Several images download as one ZIP file.
How do I sign a PDF online?
Choose Sign PDF and add your document. Draw, type or upload your signature, then click Add signature to page. Drag it onto the line, resize it, add the date if needed and click Save signed PDF.
Is an electronic signature on a PDF legally valid?
In many countries, simple electronic signatures are accepted for everyday agreements, forms and approvals. Some documents, such as government filings, court papers or property deeds, may need a certificate-based digital signature or a signature on paper. Check what your document requires; this is not legal advice.
Can I edit a scanned PDF?
Yes. You can add text, signatures, whiteout, highlights and images on top of scanned pages, and merge, split, rotate or compress scans. Because scanned pages are images, their original text cannot be selected or retyped.
Does Whiteout really hide the text underneath?
Only visually. The covered text can still be copied out of the file. Turn on Flatten edited pages in Save options before sharing, and the covered content is really removed.
Why can't I open my PDF?
If the PDF needs a password to open, remove the password in your PDF reader first. PDFs that only block copying or editing still work; their pages are processed as images. A damaged file may not open at all.
Is there a file size or page limit?
There is no fixed limit. Everything runs on your device, so the practical limit is your browser's memory. Around 250 MB of files at once works on most computers; above that the tool warns you. Phones handle smaller jobs best.
Can I convert PDF to Word here?
Not yet. The toolbox focuses on editing, signing, merging, splitting, compressing and converting between PDF and images. For a few word changes, Edit PDF with Whiteout and new text is often the quickest route anyway.
