Free Disavow File Generator and Checker

Most sites never need a disavow file: Google ignores spammy links on its own, and a wrong file can hurt. If you have a manual action for unnatural links, or bought links that will likely cause one, this tool makes the file correctly. Paste links or drop your Search Console Links export, tick the domains to disavow, merge them with the file you already uploaded (a new upload replaces it), and download a disavow.txt that passes every rule in Google's help page. Everything runs in your browser. No sign-up.

Google: "most sites will not need to use this tool". Disavow only when you have many spammy or paid links and they caused, or will likely cause, a manual action.

How to use it

Check, pick, merge, upload

  1. Check you need one

Only for a manual action for unnatural links, or paid links that will likely cause one. If a tool's "toxic score" is your only reason, the tool tells you why not to, and stays out of the way.

  2. Drop the Search Console Links export (or a Semrush, Ahrefs or Moz CSV), or paste URLs and domains. Links are grouped by domain with a count; tick only the ones you asked to have removed and could not.

  3. Merge, check, download

Paste the file you uploaded before: a new upload replaces it, so the tool keeps its lines unless you take them out. Every line is checked against Google's rules before you can download disavow.txt.

Quick answer

What is a disavow file?

A disavow file is a plain .txt file you upload in Google Search Console's disavow links tool to ask Google to ignore links to your site: one URL per line, or domain:example.com for a whole domain, with # for comments, in UTF-8, up to 100,000 lines and 2MB. Google says most sites never need one: use it only when you have many spammy or paid links that caused, or will likely cause, a manual action, after trying to get them removed. A new upload replaces the old list, and it takes a few weeks to apply.

Before anything else

Do you need a disavow file?

Google's help page puts it plainly: "In most cases, Google can assess which links to trust without additional guidance, so most sites will not need to use this tool." Disavow only when both are true: you have a considerable number of spammy, artificial or low-quality links pointing at you, and they have caused a manual action, or likely will. Since Penguin 4.0 in 2016, spam links are devalued rather than held against the whole site, and since December 2022 SpamBrain neutralises unnatural links. Our rule, the same as in the guides: no link manual action and no history of buying links means no disavow file.

The format

Line by line

LineWhat it does
domain:spammy-links.exampleDisavows every link from that domain and its subdomains. Host only: no https://, no path, no wildcard.
https://blog.example.org/page.htmlDisavows links from that one page.
# Removal asked 2026-09-02, no replyA comment: ignored by Google, useful for your records and the reconsideration request.
example.com/blog/Not allowed: Google cannot disavow a folder. Use domain: or the full URL of each page.

The file is UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII, named .txt, at most 100,000 lines (blank and comment lines count) and 2MB, with no URL over 2,048 characters. Hosts with non-Latin letters are safest written in their xn-- form, which the tool does for you.

Domain or URL?

Which to use

Use domain: for sites that exist to sell or swap links: private blog networks, link directories, "guest post" farms. Use a single URL for one bad page on an otherwise normal site, such as a paid listicle on a real blog. A URL already covered by a domain: line is redundant, and the tool drops it.

Uploading

Properties, http and https, replacing

RuleWhat it means
URL-prefix properties onlyThe disavow tool does not support Domain properties. Add a URL-prefix property for the site if you only have a Domain property.
http and httpsEach property has its own list, so upload to both if both exist. A list on example.com also covers m.example.com.
One list per propertyA new upload replaces the old one. Lines left out stop being disavowed: merge the old file first.
ErrorsThe tool lists errors at once and keeps the old list until a clean file is uploaded.
Undo"Cancel Disavowals" removes the list, or upload a file without those lines.

After you upload

Weeks, not days

It takes a few weeks for Google to apply the list as it recrawls the linking pages. Disavowed links keep showing in the Links report. With a manual action, file a reconsideration request in the Manual actions report that says which links you got removed, who you contacted and which you disavowed. Bing has had no disavow tool since October 2023, so the file is for Google only.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Should I disavow toxic backlinks?

Only if they caused a link manual action, or are paid links that will likely cause one. A tool's toxic score is not a reason on its own: Google ignores most bad links, and disavowing good ones can cost rankings.

Are my links uploaded?

No. Reading the export, grouping, merging and checking all happen in your browser.

How do I create a disavow file?

One URL or domain:example.com per line, # for comments, saved as a UTF-8 .txt file. The tool writes it for you.

Domain or URL level?

Domain level for sites built to sell links; a URL for one bad page on a good site.

Does disavowing remove the links?

No. They stay on the other sites and in the Links report; Google just ignores them.

How long does disavow take?

A few weeks, as Google recrawls the linking pages.

Does a new disavow file replace the old one?

Yes, for that property. Paste your current file in step 3 so nothing drops out by accident.

Why can't I find my property in the disavow tool?

It does not support Domain properties. Add a URL-prefix property and pick that one.

Can disavowing hurt my site?

Yes, if good links go in. Google calls it an advanced feature that can harm your performance if used wrongly.

Does Bing have a disavow tool?

Not since October 2023, when Bing removed its Disavow Links tool and API.
