Free Freelance SEO Rate Calculator
Most new freelancers pick a price by guessing what others charge. Start from your side instead: the income you need, your costs, a tax set-aside and the hours you can really bill. The calculator gives your minimum hourly rate, a monthly price for each package, and checks it against what Indian freelancers and Upwork SEO experts charge, with a USD quote for clients abroad. How to use it
Needs, hours, packages
What you need a month
The income you want to take home, your business costs (internet, laptop, SEO tools, phone) and money set aside for tax. Add a buffer for slow months.
The hours you can bill
Hours a week, weeks a year, and the share you can bill once finding clients, admin and learning are done. 60% is a fair start.
Your packages
Name each thing you sell and how many hours it takes. The rate card prices them, checks your retainer against the market, and gives a USD price for a client abroad after the payment app's fees.

Quick answer
How much should a freelance SEO charge?
Add the monthly income you need, your business costs and a tax set-aside, and divide by the hours you can bill (about 60% of your working hours). That is your minimum hourly rate. Price monthly work by hours: a retainer that takes 20 hours costs at least 20 times that rate. Then check the result against what freelancers in your market charge.
The six lines
A worked example
| Step | Example |
|---|---|
| Income you need a month | ₹40,000 |
| Business costs | ₹5,000 |
| Tax set-aside (ask a CA) | ₹5,000, total ₹50,000 |
| Billable hours: 60% of 160 | 96 |
| Minimum rate: ₹50,000 ÷ 96 | about ₹521 an hour |
| A 20-hour local SEO retainer | at least ₹10,417 a month |
The numbers are the example from our career guide. With a 20% buffer the same retainer is ₹12,500, inside the ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 that Indian freelancers quote.
Billable hours
Why not 160 hours
A month has about 160 working hours, but you won't bill them all. Proposals, calls, invoices, learning and slow weeks take a share. Rate calculators from time-tracking companies suggest that most freelancers can bill 50 to 70% of their time; the calculator starts at 60%. If you divide by 160, your rate will be too low to live on.
What the market pays
Ranges to check against
| Who | Range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Indian SEO freelancers, monthly | ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 | PW Skills, 2025 |
| Local SEO, one location, India (basic tier) | ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 a month | upGrowth, June 2026 |
| Upwork SEO experts, hourly | $15 to $35 (median $21) | Upwork, seen October 2026 |
| Agencies in the US, UK and others, hourly | 45% charge $50 to $100 | SE Ranking, December 2024 |
The Indian figures come from agency and course blogs, so read them as what the market quotes, not as averages. Far above the range: cut costs or find clients who pay more. Far below: you're probably underpricing.

Price in dollars after the fees
Every payment route takes a receiving fee and a margin when dollars become rupees: PayPal 4.4% plus $0.30 and about 3% to convert; Payoneer 1% (at least $1) and 1.2% to 4% on conversion; Skydo a flat $19 or $29 plus GST on the fee. The calculator works out the dollar invoice that leaves your rupee price in your bank. Exports of services can be GST-free under a Letter of Undertaking (LUT); take GST and tax questions to a chartered accountant.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Per hour or per month?
Most SEO providers charge a monthly retainer. Work out the hours a month the job takes, then multiply by your rate.
How much to charge for an SEO audit?
Estimate the hours (a small site often takes 10 to 20) and multiply by your rate. Add it as a package priced per project.
Should I charge less to get my first client?
A little, for one or two clients, in return for a review or a case study. Don't go below your minimum for long.
Do I add GST?
It depends on your turnover and where your client is. Ask a CA; the calculator only sets money aside.
How often should I raise my rate?
When your calendar is full, or once a year, and always for new clients first.
Are my numbers saved anywhere?
Only in your browser, on this device.
