How to use it

Invoice, rate, how the client pays

  1. Your invoice

The amount in US dollars. Or switch to "I need a set amount in rupees" to see what to invoice on each route.

  2. Today's rate

Rupees to one dollar at the mid-market rate, from Google or your bank app. Every route is measured against it.

  3. How your client pays

Bank transfer to your receiving account details, or card. The routes are ranked by the rupees that reach your bank, each with its fee, FX margin, FIRA cost, source and date.

Quick answer

Which is cheapest to receive USD in India?

It depends on the invoice. On a $1,000 invoice paid by bank transfer at ₹88 to the dollar, flat-fee export accounts leave the most: about ₹86,000 to ₹87,000 through Xflow, Wise or Skydo. PayPal leaves about ₹81,600 (4.40% + $0.30, then 3% to convert), about 7.3% less than the invoice. Under about $150, a percentage fee such as Payoneer's 1% can beat a flat one. Compare the total on your usual invoice, not the headline fee.

The two costs

The receiving fee and the FX margin

Every route takes money twice. First a receiving fee, as a percentage, a flat amount or both. Then a margin when dollars become rupees: the route pays you a little less than the mid-market rate you see on Google. A route with no fee can still cost more if its margin is wide, so the calculator adds both, plus GST on the fee where it applies, the FIRA cost and your bank's charge for a wire.

Small vs big invoices

Why the cheapest route changes

A flat $19 is almost 10% of a $200 invoice and under 1% of a $3,000 one. A percentage fee costs the same share at every size. So flat-fee routes such as Skydo and Xflow win on bigger invoices, and percentage routes such as Payoneer on small ones. The chart in the calculator draws every route from $100 to $10,000 and names the cheapest at each size. PayPal keeps about 92.4% to 92.7% of the invoice whatever the size.

How your client pays

Bank transfer or card

Most receiving accounts give you US bank details, and a client paying by bank transfer costs you least. If the client pays by card, PayPal charges the same 4.40% + $0.30, and Payoneer up to 3.99% + $0.49. We could not confirm card prices for the other routes, so the calculator leaves them out in card mode.

FIRA, GST and the LUT

The paperwork

A FIRA (Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) is the record that a foreign payment reached you. Keep one for every payment, matched to its invoice, for GST and income tax. Some routes include it, and others charge for it. Exports of services can be GST-free under a Letter of Undertaking (LUT). Take GST, FIRA and tax questions to a chartered accountant.

FAQ

Questions people ask

PayPal or Payoneer?

On a bank transfer, Payoneer's 1% and a 2% margin leave more than PayPal's 4.40% + $0.30 and 3% margin at every size. Some US clients only want to pay by PayPal, and that is a real cost too.

Is Skydo cheaper than Wise?

On small invoices Wise usually is, because Skydo charges a flat $19 plus GST. From a few thousand dollars Skydo's flat fee is the smaller share. Wise's margin is our estimate, so type the one your Wise app shows.

Why did my $500 become much less?

A receiving fee and the conversion margin. Through PayPal, $500 leaves about $463 at the base rate: $22.30 in fees and about $14.33 in conversion.

Should the client pay the fee?

You can quote so the fee is covered: switch to "I need a set amount in rupees" to see what to invoice on each route.

What about Upwork or Deel?

They pay you out through their own methods, with their own fees, so compare their withdrawal options with the routes here.
