How to use it

Create an invoice in four steps

Also called an invoice maker, bill generator or online invoice creator. Fill in the steps on the left and watch the invoice build itself in the preview.

  1. Bill from: add your business

Upload your logo and type your business name, address and contact details, one per line. The preview updates as you type.

  2. Set the invoice details and customer

Give it a number, issue date, due date and currency, then add who you are billing. Shipping copies the billing address by default; untick "Same as billing address" to add a separate delivery name and address.

  3. Add what you are charging for

Add items with a description, quantity or hours, and rate, or import them from a CSV. Then add any discount, tax lines and extra fees.

  4. Add payment details and download the PDF

Paste a payment link or your bank details, write your terms and notes, and click Download PDF. You get a clean invoice that is ready to send.

Features

Everything a real invoice needs

Most free invoice templates stop at one item and one price. Real invoicing involves several taxes, discounts, extra fees, shipping details and bank information, so the generator handles all of them.

Your logo, your brand

Upload your logo and it sits at the top of the invoice, next to your business details. There is no DigitalTreed logo on the invoice, only a small credit line at the bottom.

Several tax lines

Add as many named taxes as you need, such as CGST and SGST, VAT or a state sales tax. Each is worked out on the subtotal after discount and shown on its own line.

Discounts and extra fees

Take off a percentage or a fixed amount, and add separate lines for shipping, rush work or processing fees.

Add a payment link (PayPal.me, Stripe, Wise) and bank details in any format: IBAN, SWIFT, IFSC, sort code or a local account number.

Billing and shipping addresses

Shipping copies the billing address with one tick. Untick it to bill one address and deliver to another, with its own name.

Bulk line-item import

Already have your items in a spreadsheet? Import them from a CSV file: description, quantity and rate, one item per row.

Live preview

The invoice on the right changes as you type, so you see exactly what your client will get before you download it.

Auto-save and profiles

Your invoice saves in this browser as you type. Save your business details as a small CSV file and load them for the next invoice, on any device.

Who it is for

Built for every kind of business

Any currency, any tax system, any industry. You can bill by quantity or by the hour, so the same fields work for a product, a project or a day rate.

Billing by the hour

Freelancers, consultants and law firms can put hours in the quantity column and their hourly rate in the rate column. Describe the period, for example "Design work, 1 to 15 March".

Selling products

Retail sellers and restaurants doing catering can list each product with its quantity and unit price, add delivery as an extra fee, and use the shipping address for where the goods go.

Projects with materials

Contractors and construction firms can list labour and materials as separate lines, so the client sees what each part of the job costs.

The basics

Invoice vs receipt vs quote

An invoice is a formal request for payment, sent by a seller to a buyer after goods or services are delivered. It says what is owed, by when and how to pay. A quote comes before the work, and a receipt comes after the payment.

DocumentWhen you send itWhat it saysCan the buyer pay from it?
Quote or estimateBefore the work starts"This is what the job will cost."No, it is a proposal
InvoiceAfter delivery, or at an agreed milestone"This is what you owe, by this date, and how to pay."Yes, it is the actual bill
ReceiptAfter you have been paid"Payment received, thank you."No, it is proof of payment

The difference matters for your records and your taxes: invoices track what is owed and still outstanding, receipts confirm what you have already collected. Most freelancers and small businesses only need one document per sale, the invoice, and mark it as paid once the money arrives. Check your local rules, though: in some countries a VAT or GST invoice must carry specific details, such as your tax number.

Checklist

What every invoice should include

Leave one of these out and the invoice is likely to bounce back from your client's finance team with a question.

A unique invoice number

Sequential and never reused, such as INV-0001, INV-0002. You need it for your own bookkeeping and for your tax records.

Issue date and due date

Sets a clear payment deadline, and any late-fee terms depend on it.

Your details and the client's

Business name, address and contact details for both sides. Add your tax number to your business details if your country requires it.

An itemized list of the work

What you delivered, the quantity or hours, the rate and the amount for each line. Not just one lump sum.

Tax, clearly labelled

GST, VAT or sales tax on its own named line, not hidden inside the total. Then the subtotal, any discount and the total due.

Payment instructions

Bank details or a payment link, plus your terms. The easier it is to pay, the faster you get paid.

Get paid faster

Invoicing mistakes that delay payment

Most late payments are not bad clients. They are invoices that are unclear or stuck in someone's approval queue.

No due date

"Payment due" without a date reads as optional, and clients pay what feels urgent first. Set a real date, usually 7 to 30 days out, and put the terms in writing.

Vague line items

"Services rendered" makes a finance team ask questions. Write what you did and for which period, for example "Website redesign, March". Specific invoices get paid faster and disputed less.

Missing payment details

If the client has to email you for your bank account, you have lost a week. Put the link and bank details on every invoice.

Inconsistent invoice numbers

Skipped or duplicate numbers cause real trouble at tax time. Use one sequence and never reuse a number. Accountants and tax offices expect it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this invoice generator really free?

Yes. No sign-up and no limit on how many invoices you make. There is no watermark across the invoice; the PDF only carries a small "Invoice generated with DigitalTreed" line at the bottom.

Do you store my invoice data?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our server. The draft is saved in your browser's local storage so you can come back to it, even after closing the tab. On a shared computer, click "Clear Saved Invoice" when you are done.

Can I add GST or VAT to an invoice?

Yes. Add one tax line per tax, each with its own name and rate. Taxes are calculated on the subtotal after any discount, and each one appears on its own line, so CGST and SGST, or VAT, show up separately.

Which currencies can I use?

15 common currencies are in the list, including USD, EUR, GBP, INR, AUD, CAD and AED. For any other, pick "Other" and type the symbol you want.

Can I add my own logo and bank details?

Yes. Upload a logo in the first step, and add bank transfer details and a payment link in the Payment Collection step, in whatever format suits your country.

Can I import line items instead of typing them one by one?

Yes. Save your sheet as CSV with three columns: description, quantity and rate. A header row is skipped automatically. In the Items step, click "Import from CSV"; it replaces the items already there.

Does it download as a proper PDF?

Yes, and it looks exactly like the preview. A short invoice becomes one page sized to fit, a long one is split over A4 pages. The PDF is made from an image of the invoice, so its text cannot be selected or searched.

Can I reuse my details for the next invoice?

Yes. "Save Profile (CSV)" downloads your business name, address, payment link, bank details and terms. "Load Profile" fills them back in next time, on any device.
