How to get 1,000 subscribers on YouTube for a business

How to get your first 1,000 YouTube subscribers: a giant 1,000 with a subscribe button pressed, with a Reach your first 1,000 button
On this page

Quick answer

Post one useful video a week that answers a question your customers already ask, ask for the subscribe after it helps, and send the customers you have to the channel. In vidIQ's data, 68% of channels that hit 1,000 had posted 40 or more videos. Never buy subscribers: YouTube strips them out.

If you've searched how to get 1000 subscribers on YouTube for a business, not a gaming channel, start here. A subscriber is a viewer who follows your channel, so your new uploads show up in their Subscriptions feed, as YouTube’s own tips page puts it. That's worth having. Pew Research Center found that 84% of US adults use YouTube, in a survey of 5,511 adults run from January 30 to June 18, 2026.

But 1,000 is a milestone, not a plan.

For a pressure washer, a dentist or a furniture shop, the people who subscribe are mostly locals and future buyers. They don't come for entertainment. They come because a video answered something they were about to call you about. So this guide is about getting those people to the button, and about the shortcuts that quietly wreck a channel.

Key takeaways

  • Ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views.
  • Memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping open at 500 subscribers.
  • From February 1, 2027, new creators will need 8,000 qualified watch hours.
  • Plan for 40 videos before you judge the channel.
  • Bought subscribers count as spam and are taken out of your total.

What 1,000 subscribers gets you, and what it doesn't

On its own, 1,000 subscribers gets you nothing automatic. As of October 2026, YouTube's Partner Program page lets you apply for ad revenue at 1,000 subscribers. You also need either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.

Even then, YouTube reviews the channel, with automated systems and human reviewers. The page says a decision typically takes "about 1 month," and meeting the numbers doesn't get you in by itself.

There's a lower step that most owners never hear about. YouTube's table of monetization tiers opens channel memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping at 500 subscribers. You also need 3 public uploads in the last 90 days and either 3,000 watch hours in a year or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. The United States is on the list of countries for that tier. If you sell products, the 500 mark matters more than 1,000, because that's where YouTube Shopping for small businesses starts.

Trail map of YouTube tiers: 500 subscribers opens memberships and Shopping, 1,000 adds ads, and new channels from 2027 need 8,000 hoursDiagram by DigitalTreed, from YouTube Help: Choose how you want to monetize, and Changes to the YouTube Partner Program, read October 26, 2026.

And the top bar is about to rise.

On Changes to the YouTube Partner Program, YouTube says that starting February 1, 2027, new creators will need 8,000 qualified watch hours or 20 million Shorts views. That's "in addition to still needing 1k subscribers." Channels already in the program aren't affected, and the 500-subscriber tier stays the same.

If memberships interest you, our guide to YouTube channel memberships has the prices and payout details. Our take: for most local businesses, ad money from YouTube is small next to one extra booked job a month. Count subscribers as a sign that the right people are watching, then plan the channel around leads, as in our 90-day YouTube marketing plan.

A business channel's first 1,000 come from answers

Our view: a business channel doesn't need to be clever. It needs to answer questions.

Start with the questions your staff hears every week. "How often should I seal a paver patio?" "Can pressure washing damage vinyl siding?" Each one is a video title someone already types. Check how people phrase it with our free keyword suggestions tool, and use their words, not your trade terms.

We think a search viewer who gets a straight answer is a likely subscriber, because they can expect more answers from you. Our YouTube SEO guide covers titles, descriptions and chapters, and the thumbnail guide covers the image that earns the click. We won't repeat them here.

Group related answers into a playlist, so one good answer leads into the next and the viewer sees a body of work worth following.

Company news, award photos and "meet the team" videos can wait. Nobody searches for them, and nobody subscribes to them first.

How long does it take to get 1,000 subscribers?

There's no official average, but most channels need dozens of videos first. vidIQ, a company that sells YouTube growth tools, grouped 5,330,249 channels that reached 1,000 subscribers in the last three years by how many videos they'd posted. About 10% got there with fewer than 10 videos, while 68% had posted 40 or more.

Treat that as a rough guide, not a promise.

It's vendor data, it only counts channels that made it, and they were creators using vidIQ's tools, not local businesses. Still, the shape is useful.

Plan for 40 videos before you judge the channel.

Here's what that looks like for one made-up business.

Example: Brightside Pressure Washing in Abilene, Texas, is a fictional two-truck company. Its owner films one 5-to-8-minute answer video every Tuesday, cuts 2 Shorts from it for Thursday and Saturday, and writes 1 post on Friday. At one long video a week, 40 videos take about 9 months (40 divided by 4.33 weeks a month). That's the honest timeline to plan around. If the channel gets there sooner, great.

Ask once, after the video has helped

Asking works, and YouTube says so. Its fanbase tips suggest you "think of appropriate moments that you can encourage viewers to subscribe." Its fake engagement policy also says you're allowed to ask viewers to subscribe, like, share or comment.

The moment matters more than the wording.

Ask right after you've solved the problem, and give a reason: "We post one cleaning answer every Tuesday. Subscribe if you want the next one." Asking in the first 5 seconds, before you've helped, is asking a stranger for a favor.

Then let the channel ask for you:

  • Add a Subscribe element to an end screen. End screens run in the last 5 to 20 seconds, and the video must be at least 25 seconds long.
  • Set a channel trailer for people who haven't subscribed. YouTube shows it to each viewer only once.
  • Upload a video watermark, a square image of at least 150 x 150 pixels, shown for the last 15 seconds or the whole video.
  • Put your upload day on the banner, which YouTube's fanbase tips also suggest.

If you haven't set up the banner, trailer or a Brand Account yet, our business channel setup guide walks through it.

And if people leave before the end screen ever appears, fix that first. Our YouTube audience retention guide shows where viewers drop off.

Bring the customers you already have

A local business has something most new creators don't: customers who already trust it. In our view, they're the easiest first subscribers to win.

Put the channel link where those people already look. Start with your email signature, newsletter and invoice or receipt emails. Then add the "how to care for your new patio" sheet you leave behind, a QR code on the truck or the counter, and the video section of your website.

Tag every link you place outside YouTube, so you can tell which one sends viewers. A tagged link takes about a minute in the free UTM builder on our site. Visits that go from YouTube to your site then show up by campaign in Google Analytics, and our GA4 guide shows where to read them.

A neighbor business can help too. A paint store and a pressure washer that film one joint "prep your house for painting" video each reach a set of customers they wouldn't meet otherwise.

Shorts and posts are the front door, not the house

Shorts get you seen by strangers, but they don't count toward the long-video goal. YouTube's eligibility page says watch hours from Shorts views in the Shorts feed don't count toward the 4,000 hours.

So use each Short as a sample. Cut the best 30 seconds of Tuesday's answer, and point viewers to the full video. Some will subscribe from the Short itself; the full video is what keeps them.

Between uploads, posts keep subscribers seeing your name. YouTube lets you post text, images, polls, quizzes and videos to the Posts tab. A poll like "Which job should we film next?" costs 2 minutes and tells you what to make. Hashtags help a little with discovery too; our YouTube hashtags guide has the rules.

We checked 6 top guides against YouTube's rules

Before writing this, we wanted to know what owners were already being told. On October 26, 2026, we read the 6 ranking pages for these searches in full, from Shopify, vidIQ, Sprout Social, Small Business Trends, Lickd and a creator blog. Then we checked each one against YouTube Help and the FTC rule text.

The tips were fine. The rules were missing.

None of the 6 gave both routes to the full Partner Program tier, none mentioned the 500-subscriber tier or the 2027 change, and none said that sub4sub breaks YouTube's policy. Only 2, Shopify and Sprout Social, warned against buying subscribers at all.

That gap is why the next section exists.

Should you buy subscribers or try sub4sub?

No to both.

YouTube's fake engagement policy says it doesn't allow "anything that artificially increases the number of views, likes, comments, or other metrics." It names "sub4sub," offering to subscribe to another channel only if they subscribe back, as content that isn't allowed.

Bought subscribers don't even stay.

YouTube's subscriber count page lists "purchasing subscribers through a third-party service" as spam, and spam subscribers are taken out of your total. You pay, the number jumps, then it drops.

The fake engagement policy adds a warning for owners who hire help: "If you hire someone to promote your channel, their decisions may impact your channel." A "guaranteed 1,000 real subscribers" package puts your channel at risk, not the seller's.

Giveaways need care too. YouTube's contest policies say you may not manipulate metrics, and subscribers are on that list. So "subscribe to enter" is out; a free entry that doesn't depend on subscribing is the safer setup.

Then there's federal law.

The FTC's review rule, 16 CFR 465.8, makes it an unfair or deceptive practice to "Purchase or procure fake indicators" of influence on social media for a commercial purpose. That covers buyers who knew or should have known the numbers were fake, when the numbers materially misrepresent their influence. The definitions section lists subscribers by name. When it announced the rule on August 14, 2024, the FTC said, in part, that the rule would "allow the agency to seek civil penalties against knowing violators."

No one at DigitalTreed is an attorney, so treat this as our plain summary of the rule text as of October 26, 2026. If a vendor or partner has already bought followers for your brand, talk to an attorney about your own facts.

Read the Subscribers report every month

Once a month, check where your subscribers came from. YouTube's content performance page describes a Subscribers report that splits new subscribers by content type: videos, Shorts, live streams, posts and "others," which include YouTube search and your channel page.

If long answers bring most subscribers, make more of them. If Shorts bring views but almost no subscribers, cut fewer and point them harder at the full video. The Audience tab adds one more useful number: the share of your watch time that comes from subscribers versus everyone else.

Keep the monthly check to 15 minutes.

Write down three numbers (subscribers gained, the best video for subscribers, and website visits from your tagged links) and decide one change for next month.

If filming every week is the part that stalls, our video production team can plan and shoot a batch of answer videos with you. That's a paid service, so you know our interest; ask any video team you talk to how they'll count results.

Frequently asked

Why did my YouTube subscriber count go down?

YouTube regularly removes closed accounts and subscribers it identifies as spam, according to its subscriber count help page. If the count fell soon after a sudden jump, some of those new subscribers may have been spam or closed accounts.

Why does my public subscriber count look stuck after 1,000?

Viewers see a shortened number. Between 1,000 and 9,999, the public count moves only in steps of 10, so 1,234 subscribers shows as 1.23K. YouTube Studio still shows you the exact figure.

Do views from YouTube ads count toward the 4,000 watch hours?

Ads can win you subscribers, but ad views and watch time don't count toward Partner Program thresholds. Only "Follow-on Views" count, meaning organic views after someone saw your promoted video, according to YouTube's monetization page.

How we made this guide: we started on October 26, 2026 with the 14 YouTube Help pages linked here, read in US English and signed out. The reading list also took in the FTC's review and testimonial rule in the eCFR, the FTC's August 2024 announcement and Pew's October 2026 fact sheet. We then compared 6 ranking guides with those pages, which gave us the table above, and took the policy screenshot ourselves.

We didn't sign in to a channel, so the Studio report names come from YouTube's help text. vidIQ sells growth tools, and we say so wherever its numbers appear. Click any fact with a link and you land on its source. Eram N., who wrote this post, goes through every section and approves it before it's published.

First published July 2023. Rewritten October 26, 2026: the old post was a general list of growth tips, and one of them, prizes in exchange for subscriptions, conflicts with YouTube's contest rules. This version targets business channels. It adds the Partner Program tiers, the February 2027 change, a realistic video count, the ban on buying subscribers and sub4sub, and our check of 6 guides.
