The short answer: which one to pick, by situation
This guide is for people who have decided they need a paid SEO suite and are stuck between the two big ones. Freelancers in India pricing their first retainer, agencies choosing a tool for the team, in-house marketers asked to justify the spend, and small business owners who keep hearing both names. If you haven't used either, read our Semrush guide and Ahrefs guide first, or at least their first chapters. This one assumes you know what a backlink, a keyword gap and a rank tracker are.
You'll be able to pick one for your situation, explain the choice to a client or a boss, and know what the cheapest plan that does your job really costs. You'll also see which jobs the free tiers already cover, and when neither tool is worth paying for.
We start with the short answer by situation. Then come where each tool's data comes from and what you get free. Chapters 3 and 4 go job by job: keywords, backlinks, competitors, site audit, rank tracking, AI visibility and local. After that, prices, limits and add-ons, and last, how to switch or run both. There's a 10-question quiz and an FAQ at the end.
Every fact here comes from our two fact-checked tool guides and the vendors' own pages. Prices were read on Ahrefs'[1] and Semrush's[2] pricing pages on 16 October 2026 and checked again on 18 October 2026. Nothing had changed. Neither company pays us, and there are no affiliate links in this guide.
Quick answer
A small business with one site needs neither yet: Search Console, Ahrefs Free and Semrush's free account cover it. A freelancer starts on Ahrefs Starter ($29) or Lite ($129). An agency doing local and AI reporting fits Semrush Starter ($199). Content teams lean to Ahrefs Standard ($249). In-house teams pick by their main job.
Ahrefs and Semrush do the same core work. Both estimate any site's keywords, traffic and links, audit your own site, track rankings and now measure AI visibility. Most people would get their job done in either. The differences that decide it are narrower than review sites suggest. They are the price of the first useful plan, whether you need mobile and city-level data, how many people will log in, and whether you also research Google Ads or local search.
So here's our pick for each situation first, with the reasons. The rest of the guide shows the evidence, job by job.
Our pick by situation
| You are | Our pick | About ₹ a month, before GST | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small business with one site (a Kanpur sweet shop, a Delhi dental clinic) | Neither paid plan. Search Console, Ahrefs Free, Semrush free account and our free tools | ₹0 | Your problems are on your own site; competitor data won't fix an unindexed page |
| Student or new freelancer in India, learning | Ahrefs Free, then Ahrefs Starter for a month or two | ₹2,784 | The cheapest way to see a competitor's links and keywords; cancel when done |
| Freelancer with 3 to 5 clients, mostly links and content | Ahrefs Lite | ₹12,384 | Content Gap, Link Intersect and exports; watch the credits |
| Freelancer with local clients (clinics, coaching centres, shops) | Semrush SEO plan | ₹13,344 | Daily rank tracking by city or postal code, with the local pack, and a mobile India database |
| Agency reporting SEO and AI visibility to clients | Semrush Starter, or Pro+ for many locations | ₹19,104 or ₹28,704 | 50 or 100 AI prompts tracked daily inside the plan, white-label reports as an add-on |
| Content team planning articles at scale | Ahrefs Standard | ₹23,904 | No credit limit, Content Explorer, keyword clusters, traffic potential |
| In-house team on a large site | The one that matches your main job; often Semrush Pro+ or Ahrefs Standard | ₹23,904 to ₹28,704 | Both have history and higher limits at this level; pick by whether you also run Ads and local |
Rupee figures are ours, at ₹96 to the US dollar, and both vendors list prices in US dollars before tax (chapter 5).[1] Semrush's prices are on its own page.[2]
Which one to pick, with monthly prices before GST checked 18 October 2026. Drawn by us.
Small business in India: neither, yet
We'd tell a Kanpur sweet shop or a single-clinic Delhi dentist with a 20-page site not to buy either. Both of our tool guides say the same. Your first problems are almost always on your own site: pages not indexed, slow mobile pages, weak titles, an unclaimed Business Profile. Search Console shows what Google saw. Ahrefs Free audits your verified site and shows its links and keywords at no cost. Semrush's free account gives 10 reports a day for a look at a few competitors. Chapter 2 shows exactly what each free tier covers.
Pay when you've fixed the basics and your next question is about competitors. Our freelancing chapter gives freelancers the same rule: buy a plan when a client's fee pays for it.
Freelancer in India: start cheap, then follow your clients
Ahrefs Starter at $29 (about ₹2,784) is the cheapest way into either tool's competitor data. It adds Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker and a look at any site, inside 200 credits a month. It has no exports, no extra users and 250 rows per report, so it's a learning plan, not a client plan.[3]
Once clients pay, the choice depends on what they buy from you:
- Link building and content: Ahrefs Lite at $129. It adds Content Gap and Link Intersect, exports and 750 tracked keywords. Credits run out if you open reports carelessly (chapter 5).
- Local SEO for clinics, coaching centres and shops: Semrush's SEO plan at $139. Position Tracking checks rankings daily down to a city or postal code,[4] picks up the local pack,[5] and India has a mobile database.[6] Ahrefs' Rank Tracker can also go down to a city or ZIP code on mobile, but it updates weekly by default, and its Organic keywords report is desktop only, at country level.[7]
Agency: Semrush if you report AI and local, Ahrefs if you sell links
Semrush's Starter plan ($199) is the cheapest plan of either tool that tracks dozens of AI prompts inside the plan: 50 a day, plus the SEO Toolkit.[2] Ahrefs Lite includes only 5 custom prompts (chapter 4). Pro+ ($299) adds 15 websites, 1,500 tracked keywords and multi-location tracking. Its add-ons fit agency work: extra users from $45, and white-label Pro Reports at $20 each a month.
An agency whose main product is links or content can do more with Ahrefs Standard ($249): unlimited credits, Content Explorer, Portfolios and Broken backlinks.[1] Extra users there cost $60 each a month, up to five.
In-house team: pick by your main job
For an in-house team the price gap matters less than the fit. If your company also runs Google Ads, Semrush shows a snapshot of competitors' paid search in Domain Overview (full ad research is the separate Advertising Toolkit).[8] If you own a large content site, Ahrefs' traffic potential and parent topic make content decisions faster. Pro+ and Standard both keep historical data. Run Search Console beside either one; nothing in either tool replaces Google's own numbers for your site.
Content team: Ahrefs, with one condition
Ahrefs' content features sit on Standard and up: Content Explorer, a search engine over about 22.6 billion pages by Ahrefs' count, and keyword clusters by parent topic.[9] The condition is budget. Below Standard, Semrush's Keyword Strategy Builder groups up to 10,000 keywords into pillar pages and subpages on any paid plan.[10] Its SEO Writing Assistant allows only 2 documents below Pro+, though.[11]
Tip
Not sure? Use both free tiers for two weeks on the same site. Ahrefs Free on your verified site, Semrush's free account on two competitors. Whichever one you open more often is your answer.
Chapter 2 starts with the question under all of this: where each tool's numbers come from, and how much to trust them.
Where the data comes from, and what each gives you free
Quick answer
Both run their own link crawlers and check Google's results for the keywords in their databases; Semrush collects those results through data providers. Every database size you'll see is the vendor's own claim. For free, Ahrefs Free covers your own verified sites in depth; Semrush's free account gives 10 reports a day on any site.
Every comparison article ends up arguing about whose data is "bigger" or "more accurate". Neither page settles it. Here's what each company says, what it actually measures, and how to test it on your own site in ten minutes.
What each vendor says about its data
| Vendor claim | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Backlinks | 35 trillion external backlink records in its history[12] | Over 43 trillion backlinks in its database[13] |
| Crawling | Links index "updated with fresh data every 15–30 minutes"; a full refresh takes about two months[14] | About 10 billion pages crawled a day;[13] new links reach the database within an hour[15] |
| Keywords | 217 locations; about 1.4 billion keywords for India[12] | 28.8 billion keywords across 142 geographic databases[13] |
| Where rankings come from | Its own checks of Google's results for the keywords in its database, repeated from daily to every few months depending on search volume[7] | Google results for "hundreds of millions of the most popular keywords", collected through third-party data providers[13] |
| Traffic estimates for India | A traffic index of about 30 million keywords for India, against 140 million for the US[12] | Not given on its Data and Metrics page |
We read both pages again on 18 October 2026, and the figures matched our two tool guides.
Read that table carefully before you quote it. The numbers don't count the same thing. Ahrefs' 35 trillion is "backlinks history", every link it has ever recorded. Semrush's 43 trillion is the size of its database. Semrush's 28.8 billion keywords is a total across all its countries; Ahrefs publishes country figures instead. Neither company says how many of those links are live today, or how many keywords have real search volume in India. So "Semrush has more backlinks" is not something either page proves.
Warning
Both vendors publish their own comparison pages: Ahrefs has an "Ahrefs vs Semrush" page,[16] and Semrush a "Compare Semrush" section.[2] They are sales pages. We looked for an independent study with a published method that compares the two indexes, and didn't find one we could check. Review sites give scores, but those are opinions, not measurements.
What Google says about both
Google's own guidance covers every tool like these: "Third-party tools don't have access to our internal ranking data."[17] Authority Score, Domain Rating, KD and KD% are the vendors' own scores. Traffic for a site you don't own is an estimate in both: Ahrefs calls its Organic traffic "an estimation",[18] and Semrush's traffic figures are estimates too, built from its ranking data and, in Traffic & Market, a clickstream panel.[13]
That's why the fair test is your own site, not a vendor's page.
Test both tools against your own Search Console
- Pick a month Choose the last full month and a site you own that's in Search Console.
- Read the real number In Search Console, Performance, note total clicks for that month, country India.
- Read Ahrefs' estimate In Ahrefs Free, open Site Explorer on your verified site, set India, and note estimated organic traffic for the same month.
- Read Semrush's estimate In Semrush's free account, open Domain Overview, set the database to India, and note organic traffic.
- Compare the gap Neither will match. The one closer to your real clicks, for a site like yours, is the one to trust a little more on competitors in your niche.
Do it on two or three sites if you can. One site proves very little.
The free tiers, side by side
Both free tiers are useful, but for opposite jobs. Ahrefs Free goes deep on sites you own and shows nothing about anyone else's. Semrush's free account shows any site, but only 10 reports a day with about 10 rows each.
| What you get free | Ahrefs Free | Semrush free account |
|---|---|---|
| Which sites | Only sites you verify as your own; unlimited | Any site; 1 demo project to monitor |
| Main limit | What you can see at once (1,000 rows) | 10 reports a day across the main tools |
| Site audit | 5,000 crawl credits a month per project | 100 pages a month |
| Backlinks and keywords | Your own site: 1,000 backlinks and 1,000 keywords visible at once | Any site: 10 requests a day, 10 results each |
| Competitor research | No | Yes, inside the 10 reports |
| Keyword research | No Keywords Explorer (free Keyword Generator on the website) | Keyword Magic Tool, 10 results, no export |
| Rank tracking | No | 10 keywords |
| AI visibility | Web Analytics shows visits from AI assistants; a separate free AI Visibility Checker on the website | A domain's AI mentions, citations and visibility score |
| Card needed | No | No |
Sources: Ahrefs' Webmaster Tools page,[19] its Free page[20] and its free-use list;[21] Semrush's pricing page,[2] its free account article,[22] its Backlinks limits[15] and its Keyword Magic Tool limits;[23] Semrush's AI features guide for the AI row.[24] Our Ahrefs guide, chapter 2 and Semrush guide, chapter 2 set each one up step by step.
Ahrefs Free goes deep on your own sites; Semrush's free account looks at any site, 10 reports a day. Drawn by us.
How we'd use the two together, for free
For a small site, run both. Verify your site in Ahrefs Free and let its Site Audit crawl weekly; that's a fuller audit than Semrush's 100 free pages. Use Semrush's 10 daily reports for competitors: one Domain Overview per competitor, then Organic Rankings sorted by traffic.[22] Ahrefs' free tools on its website, such as the Backlink Checker (top 20 backlinks of any site) and the SERP Checker, fill a few more gaps.[25]
There's one difference in what happens if you try a paid plan. Semrush gives a 7-day free trial on paid plans, but exports are off during it.[26] Ahrefs has no trial. Its pricing page says "We never run discounts" and points website owners to Ahrefs Free instead.[1]
Next, the jobs themselves, starting with keywords, backlinks and competitor research.
Side by side: keyword research, backlinks and competitor research
Quick answer
For keywords, Semrush has mobile India data and Keyword Strategy Builder on every paid plan; Ahrefs has traffic potential and parent topic. For links, both are strong; Ahrefs Free shows your own links free. For competitors, Semrush's Keyword Gap compares five domains on its paid plans, Ahrefs' Content Gap compares you with up to 10 competitors from Lite ($129).
This is the work most people buy a suite for. Each job below has a table, then our view. The details of each report are in the two tool guides, and we link to the right chapter every time.
Keyword research
| Point | Ahrefs (Keywords Explorer) | Semrush (Keyword Overview, Keyword Magic Tool) |
|---|---|---|
| First plan with it | Starter, $29[27] | Free account, 10 results; full lists on paid plans |
| India | India database, about 1.4 billion keywords | India database (IN), desktop and mobile[28] |
| Difficulty score | KD, 0 to 100, from referring domains to the top 10 only[29] | KD%, 0 to 100, in six bands;[30] Personal Keyword Difficulty on paid plans |
| Beyond volume | Traffic potential and parent topic[31] | Intent, CPC, competitive density, 12-month trend[32] |
| Bulk check | Up to 10,000 keywords for 1 credit[33] | Up to 100 keywords in Bulk Analysis[32] |
| Grouping into pages | Keyword clusters, Standard ($249) and up | Keyword Strategy Builder, up to 10,000 keywords, any paid plan[10] |
| Search intent labels | Standard and up | Shown in Keyword Overview |
Our view: for a business selling in India, Semrush's mobile India database is a real advantage. If your customers search on phones, that matters, and Semrush keeps a separate mobile database for India.[6] Ahrefs' Organic keywords report, which shows what a site ranks for, is desktop only and country level.[7]
Ahrefs wins on one decision: whether a keyword needs its own page. Parent topic tells you which broader search the top page actually gets its traffic from. If "jee coaching fees in pune" has the parent topic "jee coaching in pune", one strong page can answer both. Traffic potential then estimates what that top page earns across all its keywords.[34]
Don't compare the difficulty scores. A KD of 30 in Ahrefs and a KD% of 30 in Semrush come from different models. Ahrefs counts only the links to the current top 10.[29] Guide 2, chapter 1 explains why you compare difficulty only inside one tool.
Volumes are estimates in both. Ahrefs tested its own volumes against Search Console impressions and found them roughly accurate for 60% of keywords studied, against 45% for Keyword Planner. That's a vendor testing itself.[35] Semrush's volumes are also its own estimates, and small Indian local searches are often thin in both. Full detail: Ahrefs guide, chapter 4 and Semrush guide, chapter 4.
Backlinks
| Point | Ahrefs (Site Explorer) | Semrush (Backlinks) |
|---|---|---|
| Your own site, free | Yes, 1,000 backlinks visible at once on verified sites | 10 requests a day, 10 results each |
| Any site | Starter and up, inside credits on Starter and Lite | Paid plans |
| Freshness, by the vendor's account | Index updated every 15 to 30 minutes | New links within an hour; interface refreshed every 15 minutes |
| Site score | Domain Rating (DR), and URL Rating (UR) for pages[36] | Authority Score, 1 to 100, with spam signals[37] |
| Link clean-up | Not covered in our Ahrefs guide | Backlink Audit with toxic markers and a disavow file[38] |
| Broken backlinks report | Standard and up | Not covered in our Semrush guide |
Sources for the free and freshness rows: Ahrefs' Free page,[19] its links database article,[14] and Semrush's Backlinks article.[15]
Ahrefs started as a backlink checker and links are still why most people buy it, as our Ahrefs guide puts it. That reputation is earned by habit and by its clear metrics. It isn't proven by an independent test we could find (chapter 2). Semrush's link data is good enough for outreach lists. For most Indian small businesses, the difference between the two link indexes matters far less than what you do with the list.
Both site scores are the vendors' own. Ahrefs says you can't call a DR "good" in absolute terms, only against similar sites.[36] Semrush says Authority Score is "best used for domain comparison".[37] Never compare a DR with an Authority Score.
On Backlink Audit we hold the same line as our Semrush guide: Google's disavow page says "most sites will not need to use this tool".[39] So the "toxic" score is not a reason to pick Semrush. No manual action and no history of bought links means no disavow file.
Note
From our work: a global sports platform and networking community. Its technical SEO was already good, but its posts linked to no outside sources, and earlier link building had used spammy tactics. We added sourced sports statistics to the posts, and collaboration requests then brought contextual links and brand mentions. Traffic rose 60%. The lesson for this choice: either tool finds who links to your competitors; the links come from giving those sites a reason.
Competitor research
| Point | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Quick snapshot of a site | Site Explorer Overview, Starter and up | Domain Overview, free (10 a day) |
| Keywords they have and you don't | Content Gap, up to 10 competitors, Lite ($129) and up[40] | Keyword Gap, you plus up to 4 competitors[41] |
| Sites linking to them, not you | Link Intersect, Lite and up[42] | Backlink Gap, up to 5 domains[43] |
| Their best pages | Top pages; Best by links | Top Pages report |
| Their Google Ads | Paid search reports in Site Explorer[21] | Paid keywords and ad copies snapshot in Domain Overview; full ad research in the Advertising Toolkit |
| Device and location | Organic keywords: desktop, country level | Desktop or mobile database per country; mobile shows the top 20[6] |
Ahrefs' Starter plan has no Competitive Analysis, so its cheapest gap tool sits on Lite.[27] Semrush's Keyword Gap groups keywords as Missing, Weak, Untapped, Strong, Unique and Shared, and a page-two filter (positions 11 to 20) gives a ready starting list. Comparing folders or URLs and looking at history need its higher tiers.[41]
Our view: for a Pune coaching centre's agency comparing four rival institutes, both do the job at a similar price (Lite $129; Semrush's paid plans from $139, with Starter at $199 the first one whose tool list we could confirm). Choose Semrush if those rivals also run Google Ads and you want a look at their paid search in the same account. Choose Ahrefs if you want more than four competitors in one gap report. Step-by-step versions: Semrush guide, chapter 3 (Keyword Gap for a coaching centre) and Ahrefs guide, chapter 7 (Content Gap for a D2C brand).
Who does which job better, by our reading of the vendors' pages, not a lab test. Drawn by us.
Chapter 4 covers the jobs on your own site, plus AI visibility and local search.
Side by side: site audit, rank tracking, AI visibility and local
Quick answer
Ahrefs gives the better free audit (5,000 crawl credits a month per verified site against Semrush's 100 pages). Semrush tracks rankings daily to a postal code, local pack included; Ahrefs weekly by default. Semrush tracks 50 AI prompts a day from Starter ($199); Ahrefs Lite has 5 custom prompts, and its AI index costs from $199 extra. Local favours Semrush.
These jobs are about your own site, so the free tiers matter more here, and the gaps between the two tools are clearer than in chapter 3.
Site audit
| Point | Ahrefs Site Audit | Semrush Site Audit |
|---|---|---|
| Checks | 170+ issues, errors, warnings and notices[44] | 140+ checks, including an AI Search category[45] |
| Free | 5,000 crawl credits a month per verified project | 100 pages a month |
| Around ₹12,000 to ₹13,000 a month | Lite: 100,000 crawl credits, 25,000 pages per project | SEO plan: Site Audit included; page limit not shown on the pricing card[2] |
| Higher plans | Standard 500,000; Advanced 1.5 million credits | Starter 100,000 pages a month; Pro+ 300,000 |
| JavaScript | Can run JavaScript; the toggle is off by default | JS rendering on higher tiers only |
| AI crawler checks | Not covered in our Ahrefs guide | Flags blocked OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot |
| What counts | Only internal HTML pages returning 200 use credits | Pages crawled; unused pages don't roll over |
Sources: Ahrefs' pricing page,[1] rows and limits article[46] and crawl settings article;[47] Semrush's Site Audit article[45] and AI features guide.[24]
Our view: for a small site, Ahrefs Free is the better free audit by a wide margin, and it costs nothing on every site you verify. Semrush's audit is the one to use if you're already paying for Semrush, and its AI Search checks are handy. Neither replaces a desktop crawler on a large site; our Screaming Frog guide covers that. Whatever the audit says, confirm the serious issues in Search Console, which shows what Google actually did.
Don't chase either tool's health score. Both are the vendors' summaries, and the last points are often notices that change nothing.
No paid account at all? Our Free Website Audit runs 50+ checks across 25 pages for SEO, speed, security, AI visibility and local SEO; sign in free with Google or your email for the full fix list, with the points each fix adds, and a PDF.
Rank tracking
| Point | Ahrefs Rank Tracker | Semrush Position Tracking |
|---|---|---|
| Free | No | 10 keywords |
| Keywords by plan | Starter 50, Lite 750, Standard 2,000, Advanced 5,000 | SEO and Starter 500, Pro+ 1,500, Advanced 5,000 |
| How often | Weekly on every plan by default | Daily; daily points shown for 60 days, then weekly snapshots kept for 140 weeks |
| Location | Down to a city or ZIP code, mobile and desktop | Down to a postal code; Google business name to find you in the local pack |
| Several locations in one project | Not covered in our Ahrefs guide | Multitargeting, Pro+ and up |
| AI results | Records 19 SERP features, AI Overviews among them | Spots AI Overviews; rankings in ChatGPT Search and AI Mode need Starter and up, or the AI Visibility Toolkit |
Sources: Ahrefs' Starter article[3] and update frequency article;[48] its Rank Tracker page;[49] Semrush's Position Tracking article[4] and set-up guide.[5]
This is the clearest split in the whole comparison. If your client asks "where do we rank in Lajpat Nagar on a phone today?", Semrush answers it daily. Ahrefs answers it once a week. We think weekly is fine for most SEO work, because daily checks mostly show Google's normal wobble. But local clients watch the local pack closely, and agencies get asked.
Two Semrush limits catch people out: location and device can't be changed after the campaign starts, and tracking several cities in one campaign needs Pro+.[5] In Ahrefs, keep in mind that Site Explorer's own keyword positions are desktop and country level; for a city on mobile you need Rank Tracker.[7] Guide 2, chapter 11 explains how to use a tracker beside Search Console's average position.
AI visibility
| Point | Ahrefs Brand Radar | Semrush AI visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Free | AI Visibility Checker on the website: a limited preview[50] | A domain's AI mentions, citations and visibility score in Domain Overview |
| Inside the plan | Custom prompts: Lite 5, Standard 10, Advanced 20 (enough checks to run them daily on one platform) | None on SEO ($139); 50 prompts a day on Starter ($199), 100 on Pro+ ($299)[2] |
| Bought separately | Brand Radar AI index from $199 a month per platform, $699 for all; prompt packages from $50 | AI Visibility Toolkit $99 a month (25 prompts), no free trial |
| Platforms | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot; Claude through custom prompts only | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, SearchGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews; Prompt Tracking covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT |
| Where the data comes from | Prompts Ahrefs runs: 489 million+ in its index, by its pricing page on 18 October 2026 | Prompts Semrush runs: it says it refreshes more than 317 million a month |
Sources: Ahrefs' pricing page[1] and Brand Radar article;[51] Semrush's AI features guide,[24] AI Visibility Toolkit article[52] and Data and Metrics page.[13]
For an agency that has to report AI visibility, Semrush is simply cheaper to start. Moving from its $139 SEO plan to $199 Starter adds 50 tracked prompts a day; on Ahrefs, the AI index costs $199 a month per platform, on top of a plan or on its own with Ahrefs Free. If you're on Ahrefs Lite already, use its 5 included prompts for your five most important buyer questions. Lite's allowance runs them daily on one platform, or weekly across several, which is what our Ahrefs guide suggests.
Trust both the same, which is not much on any single day. Both run their own prompts on a schedule; neither sees what real people asked. Google says: "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems."[53] Ahrefs also warns its index "may have limited coverage for brands with little or no search volume",[54] which describes most Indian small businesses. Start with the free reports in Guide 5, chapter 8, and check AI crawlers can reach you first.
Our checker tests whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and 117 more bots can access your site, with an AI readiness score and a robots.txt fix.
Local search
| Point | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Local rank tracking | Rank Tracker by city or ZIP code, weekly; local packs among the SERP features | Position Tracking by city or postal code, daily, with your business name for the local pack |
| Business Profile tools | GBP Monitor, in beta, listed in Lite's features[1] | Local Toolkit, a separate add-on, Base $30 per location a month[55] |
| Local keyword data | Country level | Local metrics for a city or region in Keyword Overview, where Semrush has the data[32] |
For a Delhi dental clinic or a Kanpur sweet shop, Semrush is the better paid tool for local work, mainly because of daily local pack tracking. Our two tool guides don't test Ahrefs' GBP Monitor or Semrush's Local Toolkit in depth, so we won't rank them. Most local wins still come from a free Google Business Profile done properly, reviews and citations, as Guide 2, chapter 10 explains.
Chapter 5 puts every plan, limit and add-on of both tools in one place, with rupee figures and the GST notes.
Pricing side by side: plans, limits, add-ons and GST
Quick answer
Ahrefs runs from $29 (Starter) to $449 (Advanced) a month; Semrush from $139 (SEO) to $299 (Pro+), with custom plans above. Both save up to 17% yearly, list prices in US dollars, and add GST for Indian buyers. Semrush has a 7-day trial; Ahrefs has none. Prices checked 16 and 18 October 2026.
We read both pricing pages from India on 16 October 2026 and again on 18 October 2026. Both showed US dollars only, and no price had changed between the two dates.[1] Semrush's figures are from its own page.[2] Rupee figures are ours, at ₹96 to the US dollar, the X-Rates monthly average for 1 to 16 October 2026, rounded and before tax.[56] Your card statement will differ with your bank's rate and fees.
The plans, matched by price
| Price band, a month | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|

| About ₹12,000 to ₹13,500 | Lite $129 (about ₹12,384): 5 projects, 750 keywords weekly, 1,000 credits per user, 6 months of history | SEO $139 (about ₹13,344): 5 websites, 500 keywords daily, no AI tracking |
| About ₹19,000 to ₹24,000 | Standard $249 (about ₹23,904): 20 projects, 2,000 keywords, unlimited credits, 2 years of history | Starter $199 (about ₹19,104): 5 websites, 500 keywords, 50 AI prompts a day |
| About ₹28,000 to ₹43,000 | Advanced $449 (about ₹43,104): 50 projects, 5,000 keywords, 5 years of history | Pro+ $299 (about ₹28,704): 15 websites, 1,500 keywords, 100 AI prompts a day, historical data |
| Top | Enterprise $1,499 (about ₹1,43,904), annual only | Advanced and Enterprise, custom prices |
Sources: both pricing pages; Starter's limits from Ahrefs' help article on the plan.[3] Ahrefs counts only unverified projects against the limit, so every site you verify is free on any plan. Semrush counts "websites to monitor": one slot per site with Site Audit, Position Tracking or a few other tools switched on, while creating a project by itself uses no slot.[57]
Both price ladders on one scale, monthly in US dollars before GST, checked 18 October 2026. Drawn by us.
Paying yearly
Both pages say yearly billing saves "up to 17%". Semrush shows the yearly price per month on its page. It's $117.33 for SEO (about ₹11,264), $165.17 for Starter (about ₹15,856) and $248.17 for Pro+ (about ₹23,824), paid as one amount upfront.[2] Ahrefs' page doesn't list yearly prices per plan; its FAQ says to contact support to switch to annual billing.[1] Our advice is the same for both: pay monthly until you've used the tool on real client work for two or three months.
Users, credits and the costs that grow quietly
| Point | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Users included | 1 on every plan; Enterprise from 3 | Additional users are an add-on |
| Extra users | Lite up to 2 at $40; Standard up to 5 at $60; Advanced up to 10 at $80 | From $45 a month each |
| Usage limits | Credits on Starter (200) and Lite (1,000 per user); Standard and up unlimited | No monthly credit pool on the pricing page; limits differ by plan |
| Exports | None on Starter; Lite 500,000 rows a month | Paid plans; off during the free trial |
On Ahrefs Lite, every user who opens reports is billed by use. A user with 0 to 5 credits in a month is free, 6 to 100 is a "Casual" user at $20, and above that a "Power" user at $40.[58] Starter has no extra users and you can't buy more credits. On Lite, pay-as-you-go extra credits cost $50 per 500 if you switch them on. Leave that off until you know your monthly use.
What a two-person team pays a month, before GST, on four plans people often compare:
$169
Ahrefs Lite with one extra Power user, about ₹16,224 a month[1]
$184
Semrush SEO with one extra user from $45, about ₹17,664 a month[2]
$309
Ahrefs Standard with one extra user, no credit limit, about ₹29,664
$244
Semrush Starter with one extra user, AI tracking included, about ₹23,424
Don't share one login to save the seat. Ahrefs says shared access breaks its terms and can get the account blocked.[59]
Add-ons
| Need | Ahrefs add-on | Semrush add-on |
|---|---|---|
| AI visibility | Brand Radar AI from $199 (about ₹19,104); prompt packages $50, $100 or $250 | AI Visibility Toolkit $99 (about ₹9,504), or move up to Starter |
| Client reports | Report Builder $99 (about ₹9,504) | Base Report $10 or white-label Pro Report $20, per report |
| Content | Content Kit from $99 (about ₹9,504) | Content Toolkit $60 (about ₹5,760) |
| Local | GBP Monitor in beta, in the plan | Local Toolkit Base $30 per location (about ₹2,880) |
| Faster site audits | Project Boost Pro $20 or Max $200 per project | - |
| Agency listing | Agency directory listing, Advanced and up | Lead Generation $90 (about ₹8,640) |

Trials, refunds and paying from India
| Point | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Free trial | None; "We never run discounts" | 7 days on paid plans, exports off; none on the AI Visibility Toolkit |
| Refunds | "Ahrefs does not issue refunds in general"; monthly plans can ask if the service wasn't used | 7-day money-back only on a first purchase with a 12-month commitment, or a first add-on |
| Cards | Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay | Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, UnionPay; no virtual cards |
| Currency | Listed in US dollars; you can choose to pay in rupees at a rate Ahrefs sets | US dollars; set your billing country to India before buying |
| Tax | Listed prices exclude tax; India is on its GST list; a business can ask for GST back with its GST number | India is on its tax page's GST list |
| Cancelling | Keep access to the end of the period, then drop to Ahrefs Free | Monthly plans aren't covered by the money-back guarantee |
Sources: Ahrefs' pricing FAQ,[1] GST article[61] and currency article;[62] Semrush's subscriptions,[26] refund,[63] billing[64] and tax pages.[65]
Warning
Neither pricing page shows GST, but both companies charge it to Indian buyers. Neither page we read gives the rate, so we don't print one. Budget for GST on top of every figure in this chapter, and enable international payments on your card before you start a Semrush trial or buy Ahrefs.
The trial difference matters more than it looks. With Semrush you can try a paid plan for a week, but you must cancel before day seven or it becomes the paid plan you chose,[26] and a monthly plan isn't covered by the refund.[63] With Ahrefs you can't try a paid plan at all, so test everything on Ahrefs Free, then buy one month of Starter or Lite.
Chapter 6 covers switching from one to the other, running both, and the jobs where free tools, including ours, are enough.
Switching, running both, and where free tools are enough
Quick answer
Before you switch, export your keyword lists, rank history and link prospects, because tracking history doesn't move between tools. Keep Search Console as your fixed baseline and never compare one tool's scores with the other's. Many teams pay for one and use the other's free tier. Our free tools cover audits, redirects, meta tags and AI crawler access.
People switch for three reasons: the price went up, a new client needs something the old tool lacks, or a new hire knows the other tool. Whatever the reason, the switch costs you history. Plan it so you lose as little as possible.
Before you cancel the old tool
Switch from one suite to the other without losing your work
- List what you use Write down the reports you opened in the last two months. Those are the ones to rebuild. Ignore the rest.
- Export while you can Export tracked keyword lists, keyword research lists, link prospect sheets and the last rank reports. Ahrefs Starter has no exports, and Semrush switches exports off during a trial, so do this from a paid plan.
- Overlap for one month Start the new tool before the old one ends. Set up rank tracking on day one with the same keywords, location and device, so you have a few weeks of both.
- Rebuild projects carefully In Semrush, a project's domain can't be changed once a tool is set up with it. In Ahrefs, verify every site you own; verified projects don't count against the limit.
- Set location and device once Semrush Position Tracking can't change location or device after a campaign starts. Choose the city and mobile before you add keywords.
- Reset your targets Rewrite any client report that used DR, Authority Score, KD or KD%. These are different models, so a client's "DR 35" has no Semrush equivalent.
- Cancel on time Ahrefs keeps your plan to the end of the period, then drops you to Ahrefs Free. On Semrush, monthly plans aren't covered by the money-back guarantee, so cancel before renewal.
Sources: Ahrefs' Starter article,[3] Semrush's subscriptions article,[26] projects article[57] and Position Tracking set-up,[5] and Ahrefs' pricing FAQ.[1]
Ahrefs' Rank Tracker can import past rankings from Site Explorer when you add keywords, but only desktop data in your main location.[7] Semrush's Position Tracking can import keywords from a file, Google Analytics or Search Console.[5] Neither imports the other tool's rank history. So the old reports, exported as files, are your record.
Tip
Search Console is the one baseline that survives every switch. Before you change tools, export the longest date range of Performance data it offers, by page and by query. Whatever the new tool says, clicks and impressions from Google stay comparable.
Paying for one, using the other free
You don't have to choose only one. Many setups work well with one paid plan and the other tool's free tier:
- Semrush paid, Ahrefs Free beside it: verify your clients' sites in Ahrefs Free for a second audit and a free view of their own backlinks. This is the pair we'd suggest for a local SEO freelancer.
- Ahrefs paid, Semrush free beside it: use Semrush's 10 daily reports for a quick look at a rival's paid search traffic, or the mobile India database, which Ahrefs' Organic keywords report doesn't have.
- Both paid: only when clients pay for both kinds of work, such as a link-building retainer and a local SEO retainer. Below that, the second bill buys you mostly the same data.
Where our free tools cover the job
Neither suite is needed for some jobs. Our free tools need no paid account and do these:
| Job | Our free tool | Instead of |
|---|---|---|
| A first site health check | Free Website Audit: 50+ checks across 25 pages; points-ranked fixes and a PDF after a free sign-in | Site Audit in either tool, on a small site |
| Redirects, 404s and headers after a fix | HTTP Status Checker: up to 10 URLs, full redirect chain, response time and headers | Waiting for the next audit crawl |
| Titles, descriptions and previews | Meta Tag Analyzer: up to 10 URLs, Google and social previews | On-page checks in either suite |
| AI crawler access | AI Crawler Checker: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and 117 more bots | Semrush's AI Search audit checks |
| Keyword use on a page | Word Counter & Keyword Density Checker: keyword percentages and top 1-, 2- and 3-word phrases | Parts of Semrush's On Page SEO Checker |
| Link code for partners | Hyperlink Generator: up to 200 URLs into HTML, Markdown or BBCode, with nofollow, sponsored or ugc | Writing link code by hand after outreach |
We don't have a backlink, keyword volume or rank tracking tool yet. For those, the free choices are Search Console's Links report (a sample of links),[66] Google Keyword Planner and Search Console's average position. Our Best free SEO tools guide lists them by job, and our Search Console guide shows what Google's own data can and can't tell you.
Other suites worth a look
If neither price works, cheaper suites do parts of the job: SE Ranking for rank tracking, Mangools and Ubersuggest for keywords on a budget, and Moz Pro. Each has its own guide in this path.
And if you'd rather not pay for any tool, our SEO service runs this research for you; you can get a quote in a couple of minutes. Otherwise, go back to the table in chapter 1, pick your row, and open that tool's free tier today.
Test yourself
Ten questions on the whole guide. Pick an answer, check it, and see your score at the end.
You got 0 of 10 right.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked
Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?
Neither is better for everyone. Ahrefs suits link and content research, and its free tier for your own sites is the stronger of the two. Semrush suits local SEO, mobile data, a look at competitors' Google Ads and AI visibility reporting in one plan. Both estimate the same things from their own data, and Google says no third-party tool has its internal ranking data.
Which is cheaper, Ahrefs or Semrush?
Ahrefs starts cheaper: Starter is $29 a month (about ₹2,784), against $139 (about ₹13,344) for Semrush's SEO plan. At the next level they're close: Ahrefs Lite is $129 and Semrush SEO $139. Prices were checked on 16 and 18 October 2026, are listed in US dollars, and GST is added for Indian buyers.
Does Ahrefs or Semrush have a free trial?
Semrush has a 7-day free trial on paid plans, with exports switched off, and it turns into a paid plan unless you cancel. Ahrefs has no free trial; its pricing page points website owners to Ahrefs Free instead.
Can I use Ahrefs and Semrush for free?
Yes, with limits. Ahrefs Free works on any number of sites you verify as your own, with Site Audit and your own backlinks and keywords. Semrush's free account works on any site but allows 10 reports a day, about 10 rows each, and one demo project. Using both free tiers together covers a lot for a small site.
Which has more accurate data, Ahrefs or Semrush?
Nobody has shown it independently. Each company publishes its own database sizes, and they count different things. We found no independent study with a published method that compares the two. The fair test is your own site: compare each tool's traffic estimate with your real clicks in Search Console for the same month.
Is Ahrefs or Semrush better for backlinks?
Both are good enough for outreach lists. Ahrefs is the one most people buy for links, and Ahrefs Free shows your own site's backlinks at no cost. Semrush adds Backlink Audit and a disavow file, but Google says most sites will not need to disavow. Compare DR with DR and Authority Score with Authority Score, never one with the other.
Which is better for keyword research in India?
Both have an India database. Semrush also has a mobile database for India and local metrics for some cities, which suits consumer and local businesses. Ahrefs has traffic potential and parent topic, which help decide whether a keyword needs its own page. Treat both tools' volumes as estimates, especially for small local searches.
Do Ahrefs and Semrush charge GST in India?
Yes. Both list prices in US dollars without tax, and both name India among the countries where they collect GST. Ahrefs says a business can ask for the GST back by giving its GST number. Neither page we read states the rate, so check the final amount at checkout.
Which is better for local SEO?
Semrush, for most local businesses and the agencies serving them. Its Position Tracking checks rankings daily down to a city or postal code and finds you in the local pack by business name. Ahrefs tracks a city or ZIP code too, but weekly by default. A well-kept Google Business Profile still matters more than either tool.
Do I need both Ahrefs and Semrush?
Usually not. Most freelancers and small agencies pay for one and use the other's free tier: for example Semrush paid with Ahrefs Free for audits and own-site links. Pay for both only when clients pay for both kinds of work, such as a link-building retainer and a local SEO retainer.
